I Told You So
(Article Contributed By Marie, of Sex Story Text - Posted on December 12th, 2011)
Don't you just hate it when someone says that to you? I told you so ... it's the victory cry of just about every smart ass on the planet and they trot it out whenever they can just to rub it in that they were right and you were wrong.
But it's more than a weapon used by smart asses to beat you over the head ... it's also the cry of those who have been rubbished for their views in the past and suddenly have proof that they were right and those who wanted to rubbish them were wrong.
And right now that's the way I want to use it ... not necessarily to you personally but to all those webmasters who over the years have rubbished me whenever I suggested that good spelling and good grammar on websites was important. And there have been plenty of them.
It seems that just about every time I've said anything about spelling or grammar there have plenty of people ... probably those who are challenged when it comes to spelling and grammar ... who wanted to shout me down.
Of course they weren't just shouting me down ... they were trying to ignore quite a bit of research that has been done over the years that produced data that showed that people are less likely to buy from a website that doesn't look professional. And when it comes to looking professional or not two of the biggest signals that sent the wrong message were spelling and grammar.
But hey why let facts stand in the way of those who choose to ignore the signals ... those who are too lazy to put some effort into improving their spelling and grammar ... those who are prepared to produce less than their best?
Perhaps now that Google's mouthpiece ... Matt Cutts ... has come out and said that sites that are riddled with spelling mistakes and examples of poor grammar are less likely to rank well those who thought these signals weren't worth worrying about may change their mind.
If you missed what Cutts said then you'll find it in one of his Webmaster Videos that came out late last week and you don't have to read between the lines to hear his message. It is quite clear from what he has to say that spelling and grammar are signals that Google looks at.
But then we actually knew that already because Google talked about the importance of spelling and grammar on websites as far back as May this year when it released a list of 23 points that Google had its human reviewers looked at when they reviewed a website as part of the Panda rollout.
Point 5 in that list asks the reviewers this question: "Does this article have spelling, stylistic or factual errors?" ... and Point 13 asks this: "Was the article edited well, or does it appear sloppy or hastily produced?"
And while we're thinking about what is important if you want your website to rank well in the search engines here are several other points that are relevant for us here in online adult that Google's Panda reviewers had to think about when reviewing websites.
"How much quality control was done on content?"
Do your websites look sloppy or untidy? Do they look like they were done by a 90 year old amateur using Microsoft Publisher or do they look smooth and professionally made with all the page elements fitting neatly together?
"Does the page provide substantial value when compared to other pages in search results?"
How do the sites your building stack up against your competitors? Are they providing more 'information' than what you provide or are you in such a rush to get the site done and submitted that you skip over things that your competitors are prepared to spend time covering?
"Are the topics driven by genuine interests of readers of the site, or does the site generate content by attempting to guess what might rank well in search engines?"
Now that is something you really need to consider if you're always striving to rank well in the search engines. Have you mastered the art of building sites that not only rank well but are also aimed at the reader?
Achieving both goals is not that easy to do but if you want to rank well in a world where Panda is on the prowl then you better work hard at achieving that goal.
Of course if all you're building right now are free sites and galleries you may wonder why you need to bother about any of this and that's not such a dumb question ... just remember though that people are less inclined to buy anything from a site that presents itself poorly.
So spelling and grammar is important ... even Google says so.
