Headlines and Creeping Jobs
(Article Contributed By Marie, of Sex Story Text - Posted on January 09th, 2012)
Whoa today was not supposed to be this hot! Of course here in my air conditioned office I don't have to worry about that ... at least not yet ... but I will have to go out into all that heat when it's time to go home.
I suppose if you're in the middle of a very cold northern hemisphere winter you'll think that I've got nothing to complain about but right I am not looking forward to close of business this afternoon. There's no undercover parking here and there's not much shade either.
Job scope creep
If you're an affiliate marketer then you probably don't have to worry about job scope creep but if you're a designer or coder or even a content provider then job scope creep can really sneak up on you. It happens when you take on a job for someone ... you give them a proposal ... you set the amount ... they agree to your terms and maybe even pay you ... and then they want more.
It starts of as something quite small ... just a little extra here and there ... and you agree. Of course what they're asking for is almost nothing so you don't charge any extra because you want them to come back in the future.
Then they want a little bit more and little bit more until what might have been quite a simple job has become huge and ... because you haven't bothered to charge extra for those small extras ... you're suddenly left doing a hell of a lot of work for nothing.
Scope creep caught me last week. A small job that I had already been paid for in advance gradually blew out as the client added more and more of those little extras. In the end I was faced with the prospect of wasting time ... and money ... arguing with the client to get paid for all that extra work or just doing it and moving on.
Ultimately I chose to do the work and get it over and done with. I could have argued with him to get paid extra but in the end I decided that it just wasn't worth the hassle. Instead the next time he comes to me for work ... and there will be a next time ... I'll send him to someone else .
It's sad when you get to that point with a client but some of them will always try to take advantage of you and this guy is definitely one of those and we just don't need him.
So if you're a provider you need to watch for the client who always wants just a little more. Right now I'm beginning to think that in future my approach will be that the proposal is binding and I won't go beyond what is set out in there.
Headlines ...
... are what we use to attract people to dig further into our marketing sites . Headlines are what we use to set the scene ... fire up the fantasies ... encourage people to spend money with us ... and headlines are what many of us do so badly.
So what are your headlines like? Do they do all those great things that a headline should do ... or do they do everything that a headline should not do?
Often a headline is the very first thing we write and if that's what you do will you take the time to go back and review what you've written when you've finished the job? If you don't then perhaps you should because just lately I've seen a few headlines that really don't do what a good headline should do.
Instead of getting me interested ... or firing up my fantasies ... they've either made me laugh or painted an image in my mind that I would not want to ever be associated with me or my business. While the guy who wrote about exploding businesses probably thought he was sending me a positive message all that I could see in my mind was an image of my business going broke and that was absolutely no incentive for me to do business with him.
So take some care with your headlines ... go back and review them several times before you launch those headlines into the wild. Even go so far as to have others read it to see if it says the same thing to them that it says to you.
You want people to be drawn in by those headlines and be ready to buy what you're selling. You don't want your headlines to send them running away in fear of laughing their heads off.
