PSP Video Conversion

I’ve covered quite a lot of ground with iPod conversion lately, but I’ve done very little for the PSP side of things. Since I’ve spent most of this week converting a bunch of content to both formats for a friend, I thought I’d write up a simple guide for converting your content to the PSP.
Firstly, you’re going to need a program called 3GP Converter - don’t be put off by the Japanese site. Download it and run the “Setup.exe” file after you’ve unzipped the file and you’ll see this screen
Make sure you select “English” at the drop down box at the bottom, and then select “Model: MP4 for PSP (Direct, Renamed)” from the top main list. Hit apply then close the program if it remains open.
Now open the main 3GP program and you’ll be greeted with this window:
Basically what you want to do is to first set the output folder to a new directory on your hard drive (for instance, if the videos are in “\content\girl1\wmv” make a directory called “\content\girl1\psp” and put them in there.
Next you’ll want to set the resolution and the quality of the outputted file. As a rule, since PSP files are the “download and forget” kind, you’ll want to keep as close to the source as possible. To do this use the “AVC QVGA/29.7fps/384kbps stereo/128kbps” setting. If you want better quality at the expense of a much larger file, the other settings are there but I find this one seems to work well for keeping a good balance between file size and quality.
Now all you have to do is drag and drop the files you want converted onto the top box. You can drag and drop multiple files at once so you don’t have to convert anything individually. However, it can be a bit tricky to do so here’s how I do it; I first select all the files I want in Explorer and leave them selected, I then leave Explorer as the main window and bring the 3GP window to the top, then drag the selected files onto it.
You can also simply make the Explorer window smaller so you can have them both on your desktop at the same time, but I find this way works well when converting a lot of content.
The program will go ahead and convert the files – it does take a little time depending on the speed of your machine and the resolution you set it at. To give you an example, on my P4 4Ghz machine I can convert a full Xvid rip of a DVD in about an hour, although it varies.
After you’ve converted the files, they’ll be in the folder you set earlier:
From there it’s a simple matter of uploading them to your site for download. The .THM files are not needed to play the movies on the PSP for later versions of the console, but they’re worth including just in case. To play them on a PSP, your members need to put them on a memory stick in the folder E:\MP_ROOT\100MNV01 (where E: is the drive letter of their PSP in USB mode or the stick in a reader). They can then select the movies in the Video section of the PSP and play them directly.
