Immortal Sites

We all want our pages to be indexed. In a perfect world they’d be cached and stored forever, generating traffic for us no matter what happened to the original page and server. Although this idea is a massive pipedream, we could be getting closer and closer to the “never-ending net”.
Sadly it’s not going to be for a while. I was gripped by nostalgia this weekend and went off in search of articles, demos and pictures from my semi-pro video game playing days. I used to hit all the big LANs and did fairly well in most of them, but this was all a long time ago. I remember there was a lot of web coverage of the events at the time, but try as I might I could not find anything left of the original sites.
They were cached by Google, sure but in their broken form. Of course Google wasn’t even really around back then so I went looking through Usenet and found a few text messages, but nothing of substance. What I did find is a lot of empty newsgroups filled with porn spam.
Nowadays of course everything’s a little different. Google crawls as deep as it can and even if it’s not indexed straight away, it’s sitting there waiting to be added at some point. In fact, Google seems to be adding pages to its index with frightening speed – one of my regular “self searches” on Google found a post I had made on a mainstream board only 48 hours before.
So could our pages now be available in years to come? I certainly hope so in some respects – I love the idea of building a freesite and having it archived right away. I love the idea of these sites actually retaining their content as well but that leads to problems with 2257 and such which could come back to haunt you at a later date.
That kind of threat makes me rethink this whole archiving idea. With the rate that Google is indexing pages and caching content it’s quite a concern for anyone in the adult industry. We’ve got enough to worry about without having to worry about how many archives are holding our content – how would you like to try and dig through Google’s archives to get URLs for your 2257 database?
I guess it’s going to be one or the other. Local archives are the way to go for now and many of the big SE companies know this and are giving us the tools to search these local caches. Maybe desktop search isn’t such a bad idea after all.
I just wished it was around all those years ago. I’d really have liked to watch a few of those old videos this weekend.
Till tomorrow, pimps!
