Those Darn Backups Again

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – your PC is your lifeline in this business and without it you’re sunk. It constantly shocks me how few people in this business have any form of backup system yet rely completely on their computers and their internet connections for their livelihood.

Another friend of mine woke up this morning to find that his PC had decided to commit ritual suicide during the night. It was a relatively new machine as well, being built early this year and was in daily use for all sorts of things, including adult online. Everything seemed fine as he turned it off on Friday night to go out but come this morning – boom. Nothing. Not even a beep. Motherboard was dead, chip was dead and one of the hard drives won’t even power on. It was a real mess.

He doesn’t have any kind of backup and so is now offline until he can get a replacement built. He wasn’t planning on spending that kind of money so early this month either, so that’s an additional strain on an income that’s already looking less and less every month for many webmasters around the world. Now he has to earn even more this month to cover the cost of the new machine, and that’s pressure no one wants to live with.

The moral of the story is simple – keep a backup machine (and a backup connection) just in case. Even if it’s not a great machine, as long as it gets you online and able to do your core work you’ll be covered until you can get your main machine fixed or finance a replacement. If your net connection goes down and you have a backup, you’ll still be able to work, even if it’s from dial up and at a slower pace.

The best source of backup machine parts are from friends who are upgrading their old systems to new ones. I’ve picked up perfectly good Intel 775 motherboards for $50 before from friends who just want to get rid of their old hardware and older Intel Core 2 Duo or Core Duo chips for as little as $30. If you ask around you’re bound to find something that will work for you – add in a cheap $50 video card and an old 250Gig hard drive and you’ve got yourself a backup machine.

It doesn’t cost much and it doesn’t take much to set it up, so why wouldn’t you do it? Your income depends on your ability to work online, and not having any form of fallback solution is just asking for trouble when the gremlins get into your PC.

Till tomorrow, pimps!
