Busting Broadband

I’m old school, not in the sense that I’ve been around for a long time, but because I can think back to the days when we were lucky to get a few glamour pictures from a BBS and call it a good catch. I can remember waiting 20 minutes for a single picture to download, and it took up an entire disk by itself on my Commodore 64.
Ah those were the days – I don’t miss the phone bills anymore though. Thank god that all ended.
I was perked to hear that broadband is on the increase again. Some new advances have been made in the field of broadband and one site I found claimed that we could all be on the net at LAN speeds (i.e. 100Mbit) within the next five years. They predicted that this would cause certain sections of the net to boom and explode like never before.
Online piracy was one (as if that wasn’t bad enough already), porn was the other.
Actually before I get into that I would like to comment on something I’ve seen around a little these past few weeks – the influx of bikini content.
I think we can all hazard a guess as to why there’s been a sudden flood of interest in the niche, but what baffles me is that people are acting like this is a new thing? Let me tell you guys something – it’s only new in the sense that you’ve just discovered it. The rest of us have known about it for years.
Personally I love the stuff. Professionally I love it even more – there’s something about a clothed woman, even if it’s just a swimsuit or nice, pretty underwear that can send most men ga-ga without even having to show a hint of pink.
The better the imagination on a guy, the quicker he will be signing up. For a sex that’s primarily visually stimulated, we can imagine some pretty wild things sometimes. What is it about a woman in a bikini that can drive a man so wild so quickly?
I’m not exactly sure of it myself, but it’s the same drive that fuels thousands of membership sales all over the world. There’s gotta be something there, so if you were one of those people who saw the niche, blew it off as worthless and are now stuck in the 2257 hole, maybe it’s worth looking at again?
On the flip side if you’ve never honestly explored the niche, take a look at it. Non-nude is probably going to be the mainstay of the future, depending on what transpires in court next month.
So back to the broadband thing (don’t you love it when I jump around with subjects?). I personally have a pretty decent connection, but I know people within 10 miles of my house that cannot even get cable TV, let alone a cable modem. DSL? Forget it – the phone lines running out to some of these rural properties look like they were installed at the turn of the century, and that’s probably the last time they were inspected too.
We’ve even had some storms here that have brought down lines around the rural areas with high winds, but do they replace them? Nope – the farmers get the same shit patched up again, and I know at least one of them would love to have a high speed connection. Since I moved to Vegas my speed has increased slightly, but with a price – I now have a cap on my monthly usage. It sucks.
It maybe a small section of their customer base, but the rural areas are the ones that are hurting the most for broadband technology. They’re the people stuck in the yesteryear I so fondly remember – downloading webpages once every 20 minutes (ever try to view some paysites on a 30k modem connection?) and a video every three hours for a 30 second clip.
The point is that while the experts might like to promise us a bed of roses in the future, the present day is what we have to deal with. There’s no point planning for everyone to have a 100Mbit connection to your server when the very best we can get is far lower than that, and the most common connection is far, far worse.
So, unless you want to push even cable users back to the old school days of long load times, frustration and pure apathy, please make sure your sites, your galleries and your content is optimized as much as possible. It’s not hard, it only takes a little longer and your traffic, sales and income will thank you for it.
