You Need Backups

When was the last time you backed up your work?
Was it last week? Last month? Last year? Whenever it was, it’s probably about time you took another backup just to be on the safe side. Your PC’s working data is the most important part of your day-to-day business dealings and if you lose that, you’re history.
By what should you back up? Well, it depends on what you do with your PC and how often you do it. To give you some example, here’s what I use in my daily routine, what software I use and what I back up:
Email (Outlook Express)
I back up the entire saved folder for Outlook (you can find this under the Tools option pane) and also export all my email account settings to a separate folder to be backed up as well. I also save and export my address book regularly.
Articles and Writing (Office)
For this my entire collection of articles is backed up in its entirety. This is a simple backup that I do every month just to be on the safe side as replacing 1100+ articles would be a major pain in the ass.
Design Work (Photoshop and others)
I save and backup the various custom files I have for actions, brushes, styles and so forth. Many people simply back up the entire installed folder for Photoshop, but it’s a little on the large side when you start adding a lot of things to it. I just save the smaller files themselves every so often.
Host Backup
This I do once a month at the very least. I download everything on my hosts and save that directly do a DVD as it comes down, so I don’t have to worry about that being lost. I also export all my mySQL data, tables and such to files via an admin panel and save those too just in case.
Bookmarks
This doesn't apply only to your browser, but to anything else that has an “address book” of sorts – such as an FTP program. I use SmartFTP and I backup all my servers and passwords regularly. You can also save your entire default profile in Firefox by using this method.
I know a lot of webmasters complain about the costs of continual backups, but there’s a cheaper solution – if you’ve got an old hard drive laying around, you can pick up an external enclosure for it from online stores such as Newegg for around $40. All you have to do is put it in, plug the drive into your PC via a USB port (if you don’t have USB 2.0 on your PC, buy an addon card for it) and use that removable drive as your backup system. That way you don’t have to continually buy DVDs all the time, but now 16x DVD-Rs are so cheap, it’s hard to find an excuse not to use them.
I even picked up a USB thumb drive for $25 the other day with a whopping 4 Gig of memory on it. That’s plenty for most of my backups and now I can carry it around with me on my keychain!
Now you’ve read this, go back some stuff up! I know I am going to after I’ve published it on the site. You never know when you’re going to need it.
