It’s almost time for the summer Internext show in Florida! I’ve been to many shows, but in case this is your first time going to a adult-related trade show, here’s a few quick tips for your trip:
Getting There
If you’re heading into Florida from within the U.S, remember that it still takes a fair amount of time to get through the security checks and searches in place in just about every airport in the country. Plan ahead of time and make sure your carryon and stowed baggage is clean and doesn’t contain anything that could set off an alarm. I don’t even pack a shaving kit anymore when I travel – it’s fair easier to just buy a $8 Mach3 razor at a store when I get there.
If you’re coming in from outside of the U.S, expect delays at every turn. When entering customs, be prepared to answer a lot of questions and provide proof on where you’re staying and why. It’s a pain in the ass for the honest traveler, but it’s a price we have to pay to be safe nowadays.
Pack for the Season
Florida in August is, predictably, hotter and more humid than a sauna on the surface of the sun. You will be changing clothes fairly often simply due to the heat and humidity, so pack with this in mind. If you’re fair-skinned, be sure to bring plenty of sunblock if you want to venture outside of the hotel and make sure you use it before going outside.
I’d also recommend very light clothing for the evenings – most of the parties are on-site but those aren’t are in a variety
Avoiding Technical Issues
You’ll also need to make sure you bring everything you need technology-wise for your trip. The hotel does have broadband in the rooms but last year the sheer volume of people trying to get online slowed it to a crawl. You’re far better off getting a dialup account from someone like Earthlink to use while you’re in the hotel – just use their local access number and it shouldn’t be too expensive.
Think Ahead
There’s a fair few parties this year compared to last year, so you might want to plan out a schedule in advance on which ones you’ll likely attend and make sure you have invites to them all. Some parties are by invitation only, so don’t expect to get into them all. If all else fails the bars and lobby at the Westin were always busy with people, so there’s plenty of chances to network outside of the regular party schedule.
Show Strategy
One thing I always find that helps is to take the show floor a section at a time, depending on how long you have. If you’re staying for the duration, I’d recommend visiting the whole show floor briefly on the first day and making sure you have invites and contacts you need for the rest of the show, then go individually to booths that interest you over the remaining few days. Last year’s show wasn’t that big and could easily be covered in a single day, so spread out your time and enjoy it all!
Till tomorrow, pimps!
