Learning a Lesson

In any business there are many faces that we, as the owners can present to the buying public. The sex industry is a rather broad term for something that spans just about every conceivable media type known to man. The net portion of it is actually pretty new considering the length of time that the rest of this shit’s been around.
In that time I’ve always been amazed at how someone with a little bit of work can make some money. If they’re prepared to put in a lot of work they can make even more over time.
One thing that I used to dabble in a bit was cam sites. Like most newbies of a few years ago I got my start with iFriends. It wasn’t much of a start considering where we all ended up with them, but at the time I was quite in awe of the buying potential of the net. I thought most surfers were like me – experienced freeloaders who can smell pop-up hell coming a mile away.
As I got deeper into the marketing of the adult net, I realized a few things. Some of those things I’ve shared throughout my 1800+ articles for PornResource.com over the past six years (yes, it really has been that many and that long). Some I’m still working on refining myself before I let them loose on the world.
One thing I found though is that even the most ordinary people can make some cash on the net. Not every guy is a shit-hot coder or designer, and not every girl wants to appear sans apparel in front of a webcam. Some do and some do very well at it.
Most of us are still on the learning curve in some form or other. I can honestly say that I learn something from the adult net every single day. I’ve never stopped reading (even if I don’t post anymore to boards), I’ve never stopped learning and I certainly won’t ever stop in the future.
Okay I’ve waffled enough for now – time to make a point. No matter what your skill set is, you have the ability to make a living doing this. You just need to learn the finer points of it.
So many webmasters spend an huge amount of time doing things that really have no direct relation to their bottom line. I love boards as much as the next person, but I don’t post on them. I read them all daily during my coffee breaks and I take what information I can find, filing it for later use. I don’t feel the need to have a post count higher than the national debt in order to feel like I’m a “someone”.
I use my time for my business and my interests (this is of course one of the only good things about being single. Plenty of time for yourself). I use my time to learn more about the business I’m in, the driving forces behind it and the marketing potential that can be unlocked from anything.
Next time you’re stuck for something to do, take a trip to your local bookstore and start reading the marketing text books. Read a little about psychological theory and the sexual human being. It may sound completely geeky to say, but information is power – on the web we have very little else.
If you’re at all involved with design, I’d also take the time to read up on color theory and harmony while a creative writing book or course will do wonders for your text links.
There’s so much out there that you can do to further your business. You’d be a fool not to do some of it sometime or other.
