Webmaster or Pretender?

I saw a thread on one of the boards this morning that posed the question “What’s the difference between a pornstar and a hooker?” The poster’s point was that because they both get paid to have sex, the distinction is very blurred.
It’s an interesting question when you think about it. Many posters (I hesitate to use the term “webmaster” because boards are filled with surfers nowadays) claimed that the involvement of film separated the two, while others said that there was no difference at all, except for maybe the sums of money involved.
It got me thinking though – what’s the difference between a webmaster and a newbie? Both sell porn for a living, but at what stage does one make the distinction between the two “states”?
Some might say that again, it’s down to the sums of money involved. A newbie might only be making $500 a month, while a webmaster might be making $5000 a month. Some might say it’s how long they’ve been in the business, and yet others might say it’s a combination of all of these.
Personally I think it’s none of them. The difference in my mind that separates a newbie from a webmaster is this; nothing.
We’re ALL still newbies. We might not be new to the industry anymore, but this business changes so quickly that we can never be the master of our chosen section. Even if we thought we were, I guarantee that someone will come along who knows more than you do.
One thing that I’ve always said to newcomers to the business is that they need a willingness to learn and to work hard above all else. It was hard enough to get started back in 2001 when I moved over to adult. It’s even harder to do the same thing now in 2008. So much has changed that it’s basically a different industry (at least, behind the scenes).
Some webmasters who have been around for a while seem to forget this, again blurring the distinction between the two terms. I know webmasters who think that they are at the top of the knowledge curve and can never be toppled from the peak of their egos. I know webmasters who are content to sit back, let their networks do the work and take what income they can without ever lifting a finger ever again.
Why should we call these people webmasters while newbies are working a hundred times as hard and learning everything they can?
I guess in a way it boils down to something else – perception. Just as with the pornstar/hooker question, there’s a certain social line drawn between the two different states. Who would ever want to admit that they’re a newbie?
I know I constantly consider myself one. I am always learning, I am always looking to be challenged and I’m always looking for something new.
So which are you?
Till tomorrow, pimps!
