Long Memories

If there’s one thing I hate to see it’s a webmaster with bad money management skills. If there’s one thing that I cannot stand seeing is a webmaster who thinks they’re god’s gift to the industry, and has bad money skills on top of it.
It’s just not pretty.
I will admit that before I got into this business, I was pretty bad with money. I lived from paycheck to paycheck, sometimes getting caught out when the income didn’t quite meet the outgoings and got into some sticky situations. I’m sure at one point it’s happened to us all.
But you know, never at any point did I tell the bank to quit bugging me, or boast about the new car I was driving, or tell them that when I got paid, they would get paid.
I can imagine the bank’s reaction if I had – I’d probably have found myself in court quicker than you could say “What a fucking moron.”
Actually they probably would’ve have bothered – they’d have just done their thing and I would be up the proverbial creek without a paddle.
I’ve been owed money by a webmaster for the past four years. I’ve not heard from him in all that time – the last post he made was something akin to he had an accident and was recovering, but then he dropped off the face of the Earth. The webmaster in question has always been good to me and paid me on time, even going out of their way to send me a gift once for a favor I did for them.
This leads me to believe there’s something very wrong and I’m not too concerned. If, however, he started posting again and completely ignored my attempts to contact him, then turned around and posted on a board that I shouldn’t worry and it wasn’t his fault he owed me money, I’d have hit the roof.
Of course, if you read any of the big boards you’ll probably see something like this happen every now and then. Strange how there’s always people who have also been screwed by the same guy and come out of the woodwork when someone makes a thread like this.
It’s almost as if they want to do something about it, but (maybe rightly) want to avoid the drama and e-thuggery that accompanies these types of threads. Of course, when someone else outs the guy they all pour in and ask for their monies/sites whatever that they’re owed.
What bugs the living shit out of me (and should bug any honest webmaster out there) is that we all seem to have very short memories – if someone screws me over I never forget, but that’s probably the Italian in me. You can bet your ass that threads and complaints against people like this are forgotten pretty quickly and everything goes back to business as usual.
Here’s a tip pimps – let’s all quit being such fucking pussies and call out these people for what they are; a liability to our own businesses, the industry as a whole and our perceived public image. Let’s remember the ones who ignore our ICQs because they owe us $3000 or whatever, let our friends know and see that they either develop some money management skills or find another line of work.
