It didn’t dawn on me until last night while trying to sleep that I haven’t had more than two days off in over a year. I don’t even count Internext this year because, well, it was absolutely terrible (I don't count people sitting at tables in a totally lit nightclub as a “tradeshow”). Even when I am there I hardly sleep - at least at home I can sometimes get a good eight hours in. Add to that other interests now in mainstream and I'm pretty much going for 18-20 hours a day in some cases.

That’s “sometimes” – insomnia and stress have killed my sleep patterns. It’s almost impossible for me now to sleep through the night, but that’s not too bad. I tend to do my best work in the small hours anyway. There are fewer distractions around, nothing on TV and my kitties finally stop bugging me for attention.

The time-off situation is bothering me a little though. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not about to take a month off and expect everything to be rosy when I get back. In fact, I really don’t want any time off; I’ll just get extremely bored within a day and be back to working. Add to the fact that my daughter is due to be born in six weeks, and I won't be seeing a break anytime soon.

Yes, this job has become more than a job. It’s now a lifestyle.

Sadly, I’m not up to my neck in gorgeous models willing to do anything in the name of a photo shoot, nor am I swimming in the masses of money made from my network of 500 paysites. What it does give me though is a possible route to expansion that I wouldn’t find in a regular place of work. I’ve mentioned before that I have aspirations outside of the adult industry, and I’m very steadily working towards them.

I’ll always do porn though, simply because I love it. I will always be building sites, designing front-ends for people and most importantly of all, I will always be writing for Pornresource.com. I'll always be working for our sister sites, our affiliate programs (Adult Players Club and Hundies) and doing odd-jobs along the way.

Most newbies start with the “paysites!” gleam in their eyes. I know I did when I first started. A paysite was all I wanted. I thought it would be the road to the big bucks – the epitome of earning potential. Thank God I talked myself out of it (with a little help from Mr. No-Capital). A paysite needs a huge amount of investment (money and time) just to get it off the ground. You’re also looking at a massive amount of preparation work to get some traffic flowing to it right off the bat.

Add to that the problems of a possible affiliate system (and double the amount of capital required to start with so you have a slush fund to pay them with) and it just isn’t going to happen anytime soon for me. That’s fine though – I still think it’s best to do something well rather than make a half-assed job of it and spend the rest of your time cleaning up the mess.

I’ve seen it happen so many times, I can almost spot the non-starters from a mile away. A new webmaster, flush the ideal that a paysite is instant money throws up a front-end, a terrible member’s area and busts out an affiliate program using a 3rd party to pay and bill everyone. A few months later he or she is looking at nothing except a big bandwidth bill at the end of the month.

They might have put in a lot of hours to get it up and running – I know I spend enough time on my own stuff right now that there’s not a minute of the day where I’m not working on something somewhere. Maybe they need to step back from everything a little and take stock of what they have NOW rather than what they could have.

It’s what I’ve done to try and rescue a little bit of time off for myself. I’ve stopped working on twenty different projects at once, instead concentrating on one thing at a time. Not only has this freed up a lot of time for me to actually sleep, it also feels a lot better when something gets done. Juggling too much at once means you’re always left with everything half done – finishing something is extremely satisfying.

I have my aspirations and ambitions; a paysite is somewhere in there along with everything else. A good vacation is in there too, but that will have to wait a while. I have work to do, bills to pay and a future to save for.

Till tomorrow, pimps!
