If there’s one thing that can separate a good webmaster from a bad one, it’s determination. With our business attracting more people to it every day, you have to wonder how many of these new webmasters will survive for any length of time.

We all know that the business now isn’t the “pot of gold” it used to be in the early days. People who are in the business, making sites and sales know how hard it is to keep going, but we push on regardless. It’s the outside world and the newbies coming into the business for the first time that are in for a shock.

A lot has changed since I started doing porn for a living but I’m still here, thanks to many people (especially Bosshawg) and my own stubbornness. Yes, I’m a stubborn bastard and when you’re running your own business that’s not necessarily a bad thing. When my friends were telling me I was wasting my time, I was making money.

My father is an astute and very successful businessman and I took a lot of cues from him in my early days. He used to tell me that life as well as business has two facets to it; who you know and never giving up. How right he was.

Knowing the right people is so important I cannot stress it enough. Being popular on a message board is one thing, but having the contacts to conduct your business and take it in the direction you want to is such a powerful moneymaker, I’m surprised so many people put the focus of their online working life into the jumped-up popularity contests you see on so many boards.

Sure it might get them a few contacts, but wouldn’t that time be better spent actually working?

I see the same thing happening every time I go to Internext. Webmasters come for the parties, the models and the free shit, completely forgetting the real reason they’re there – to do business. Trade shows (especially in our market) have their fair share of distractions, but that has a time and a place. Your emphasis should be on expanding your circle of contacts, making new deals and exploring new markets, not getting drunk at every opportunity and hitting the show floor only to check which parties are going on that night.

Like I said, I’m kind of stubborn when it comes to business.

Sales are slow right now for everyone, but there is light at the end of the tunnel – probably more so than ever before. We can all wish for a return to the early days, but that’s simply not going to happen. What I, and many others are seeing though is an increased confidence in the Net as a shopping and entertainment tool. More to the point, people are slowly realizing that in order to get what they want, they’re going to have to pay for it.

There’s so much to look forward to, I cannot understand why anyone would want to quit this business (unless it’s for family/religious reasons). New technology is making our products more inviting and more appealing to the public, we’re slowly cleaning up our act and paysites are starting to become worth joining again.

In essence, we’re on a road to recovery. The business itself will never give up. People will always want porn and there will always be the percentage of those surfers who will be willing to pay for it. In the coming years as more and more of the Net closes its doors to non-paying surfers, the realization that the free ride is over will start to have a positive effect on our bottom lines.

Until then, be stubborn yourself. Never give up – stick with it, no matter what and you’ll be fine. If you have to take a part-time job in the real world to help with the bills, so be it. There’s no shame (no matter what anyone on a board says) in looking after your interests.

Never give up. Remember that, pimps.
