Experience is Everything!

There’s been a lot of articles lately about what advice you should and shouldn’t take if you’re a newbie. While it’s definitely true that no one’s going to hand you their every secret right off the bat, there’s still some useful information to be found out there.
The truth of the matter though is that not everything works for everyone. There are so many varying factors in this business that there’s simply no way to predict how one “system” will work for another webmaster. I’ve said this many times before in various articles I’ve written and it’s definitely one of the most important things to remember when you’re just starting out or even if you’re established in this business.
New programs appear all the time; the best of the bunch normally are jumped on by everyone and their kid sister. The inevitable ratio comparisons follow, with everyone trying to squeeze a little more information out of their peers in an effort to improve their own bottom line.
Let’s not kid ourselves here - there’s no magical formula that will get you the best results form the traffic you have. There’s nothing that can be written, no “10-step system” that you can read that will make you a millionaire overnight. The only way is to read, to research, to learn and to experiment.
Every writer I’ve seen who’s posted any type of article on any of the resource sites out there has always had something good to say. It doesn’t matter what the subject is, there’s always something to be learnt in them. I honestly don’t care if you’re making $200 a week or $20,000 - there’s always something to learn in any business; ours changes so rapidly that this applies to us more than most.
Other webmaster’s experiences, even if they’re negative, serve to bolster our own knowledge and our own ideas for the future of our business. I’m primarily a designer, but I’m also a holder of two degrees in Computer Science and Programming, and I have eight years of magazine editing and journalism behind me. I am qualified to give advise as I see it, to share my experiences and my “community” goals with those that read this site, my articles and my posts on various boards.
One such series of threads I was directed to lately concerned the “Expected” price some webmasters are demanding of coders and designers such as myself. As a good friend of mine put it, “We have a skill - that skill is in demand. That skill has to be learnt, and when it’s learnt, it doesn’t even guarantee that it can be applied with any guarantee of results”. I love to help people learn the basics of products like PhotoShop, but only years of experience can produce results. I have nothing against any kind of competition at all - in fact I welcome it with open arms. Why else would I dedicate a large portion of my working day to helping others with my articles?
Reading back on this, it might seem I’m all over the place but I do have a valid point here. Somewhere. Oh yeah; your own learning curve is one of the major factors that effect your bottom line. The flip side of the coin is that those people who DO already have the skills that are in demand deserve a little credit and compensation for their efforts in my view. Nothing irks me more than seeing an up and coming designer or programmer selling their designs for far less than their worth.
I’ve helped a lot of newbies go through the teething stages of this business. The help I give them also encourages me to modify and improve my own systems. Next time you read something you don’t totally agree with, at least try and find some good in it because it’s there. You just have to apply it to your unique situation.
Till tomorrow, pimps!
