A Business is a Business

Firstly, a little bit of bad news. I’m afraid I won’t be able to make it to this year’s Florida Internext. I know, I know – you’re all so looking forward to seeing me, but it simply can’t be helped – having a daughter will kind of interfere with your plans. Don’t cry too hard, okay?
(Crickets chirp in the background, tumbleweeds roll across the page)
(Coughs) Anyway, back to today’s article. I had the chance to speak to two very successful mainstream business owners yesterday for a while, mainly about the possibility of sub-letting part of their property for an idea of mine. That is still up in the air, but the conversation I had with them was extremely interesting, and parts of it are worth repeating because of the insight they had in business.
I’ll begin by saying both these guys are my age – mid thirties. No rich-kids or trust funds here. Just regular guys who have done very well.
If you live in a big city, you’ve probably never noticed the “small town slump,” where there’s very little to do. In a town such as the one I used to live in, this is compounded by the weather – half of the year the town is in a deep freeze and its population is made up of college students. The other half of the year it’s baking hot and the college kids have gone home.
The upshot of this is that during the winter, there’s nothing to do bar watch a movie or drink – even if you want to get outside. Come summer there’s still not much else to do here, but the demographic of the town has vastly changed. Loosing or gaining a couple of thousand 18-23 year olds will do that for an economy.
The awareness of this situation is one of the contributing factors to their success. While we have no idea the real numbers or demographic for our industry, we can make some pretty solid educated guesses with what little data we have. Pitching to the middle of the road all the time does nothing for anyone.
While we were talking about the possible sub-lease, the idea of cross-promotion and sponsorship came up. In other words, we’d combine our efforts in marketing, advertising and promotions to take advantage of both business’ appeal and nature to become more than the sum of its parts (so to speak). This is something we try to do in adult but in reality, happens very little.
Competing paysites will sometimes sell each other exit traffic. Competing sponsors sometimes sell each other’s paysites within their own sites as additional revenue, but very rarely work together on such a promotion.
The same goes for the regular webmaster. We might trade traffic or the occasional link, but no one really puts any effort into any cross promotion or marketing here in adult. Is this because of the competition we are surrounded by, or because we don’t know any better?
Lastly, I want to touch on this real quick. Attitude is so important that people who don’t have it can never truly succeed. These guys had it; they were professional, responsive to ideas, approachable and very bright guys. They turned a disused old supermarket into a huge business and didn’t take no for an answer when the doubters kept telling them to quit.
That kinda rubbed off on me when I was talking to them, and I hope some of the articles I write instill that confidence in you. Without the “I will do this!” attitude, you will fail at the first hurdle and give up without a fight.
With the right attitude, you can do anything.
Anyway, enough of this ranting. I wanted to show that the difference between mainstream and adult is very little when you take away the products or services each offer. The key elements are the same, and if you can find someone who’s been successful in either and talk to them about how they did it, you might find yourself thinking in never-before explored areas.
It’s quite liberating, I promise.
Till tomorrow, pimps!
