I was playing paintball with some friends yesterday when they got talking about porn – again. It’s a hot topic of conversation with my circle of friends because “we’re all married, so we need to see people fucking, even if it isn’t us!” as my buddy put it so eloquently. One friend of mine said that he’d been talked into getting a trial membership for a site and had cancelled more or less right away.

I asked him why he first felt that he was talked into it, thinking that one of the others had told him about the site and how good it was, but he said that there was a girl he’s been talking to on AIM who liked porn, and wanted some from that site sent to her, but she couldn’t afford a membership. She asked him to go sign up and download a bunch, then upload it to her.

This is a new twist on an old scam but I didn’t say anything to him right away in front of everyone (I’m just that nice of a guy). Instead I took him aside later on and told him about how he probably just got conned by the affiliate who owned the referral link he clicked, and that he should either report the conversation to the site and its affiliate program, or just take it as a $5 learning experience.

What shocked me was that he didn’t cancel right away because he twigged on the scam. He says he signed up, was charged right away and could enter the site, but the member’s area contained nothing but old galleries and videos that have been doing the rounds for years. He couldn’t find a single gallery or video of the girl who’s site the member’s area belonged to, nor could he find a way to actually unsubscribe easily.

Eventually he found the cancel link by going through the site methodically for about an hour, but claimed it was hidden away in a totally unrelated page.

I told him to keep an eye on his credit card over the next week or so for any additional charges.

It’s shit like this that puts people off buying porn online. Another friend said that he’d never buy porn online because there was so much of it for free, he’d need to jerk off thousands of times a day to even begin to see it all. A strange way of putting it, sure but a truthful one. People see free porn all over the place, hear horror stories like my friend’s an vow never to buy a membership online.

Sadly, we only have ourselves to blame for this mess and there’s really very little we can do about it. All we can do is to keep our sites the best quality we can, offer the best customer service and value for money we can and show the public that we’re not all scammers running stupid bait and switch shit in order to make a few bucks.

Till tomorrow, pimps!
