I’ve always been a night owl ever since I worked for Casinos back in the early nineties. They turned me into a night worker forever and now I relish the peace and quiet that comes at night. Everything slows down (yes, even the Net) at 4am and it’s a great time to get a lot of work done. My ICQ is quiet, no emails flooding me except for the obligatory “chick” who wants to know why I haven’t responded to her email about her new webcam and nothing on TV.
Then again, having a baby can really screw up your body clock – hence why I am writing this article at 3am while she's sleeping for the first time since 8pm yesterday!
I get a lot of work done this way, but it has its drawbacks. Sleeping during the day sometimes isn’t as refreshing as sleeping at night so every now and then my body will rebel against my self-imposed regime and make me sleep for a good 18-hour stretch. It only takes a few days to get back to my normal working day, and thankfully this is one of the few industries that is alive and kicking no matter what time of day or night.
Maybe it’s because a lot of people surf for porn in the wee hours of the morning for a little privacy. Maybe they’re checking out our sites while the wife/husband or whatever is in bed (Yes, women surf for porn too guys, but if you don’t cater to them you’re missing out on their money). Maybe they work nights like me, working the graveyard shift for whatever business they’re in or maybe they’re webmasters like us just checking out the competition.
Whatever the reason, the time zones of the world see to it that we have traffic more or less 24 hours a day. I see only a very slight dip in my numbers between 3am and 5am. The rest of the time it’s pretty constant and has been for months on end. What I did you help this is to translate my pages into various languages around the world. Some were good translations (done by friends of mine) and others, well, they were left to free online translation services.
I used a time zone map to figure out what I should translate into, covering just about every time zone there is. It seems to be working, although the traffic from some of the countries is only really useful for filtering to my trades and boosting my numbers.
It’s one of those ideas you get at 5am that always seems obvious, but is rarely tried. Give it a shot and let me know the results.
