Everything Old is New Again

Somehow I feel so complete ... so at one with the Internet ... an integral part of Cyberspace ... and it's all because I opened up my font list and found that I had it!

Yes! I have the new Comic Sans ... I too can wield the power the latest fad in fonts and undoubtedly make zillions from all my websites that will henceforth be built using the latest and greatest font.

You are no doubt wondering what on earth I'm talking about and I'll tell you so that you too can join the ranks of the trendy font users and carry the popularity of Papyrus way beyond anything that Comic Sans every achieved.

I'm sure you've probably never heard of a font called Papyrus but millions of people ... you included ... have almost certainly seen it even if you didn't know that it was lurking down there in your browser's font list.

If you've seen the movie Avatar or any advertising for the movie then you've seen the Papyrus font in action because that was the font that was used in the screen titles. Frankly I didn't even know it existed until I saw an online rant about the font and already some font 'experts' are suggesting that it's going to be the new Comic Sans of the Internet ... if it's not already there.

It seems that the guy who designed the font thought that by 2007 it had become overused.

So if you want to use it now's the time to start building a few sites that incorporate that font because before things really get out of hand and every man and his dog will be using it on their websites.

Actually, it's interesting to see how a movie can have so much influence over what people are using in their sites on the Net. I've just done a little research and Papyrus first appeared in 1982 and was originally hand-drawn so it's only taken 28 years for Papyrus to become a major hit.

The Beaver
One of the major news sites here in Australia is telling me that something else that's quite old has suddenly begun to gain some notoriety. Back in 1920 the Hudson Bay Company ... famous for its fur trading business ... launched Canada's second oldest magazine called The Beaver.

Originally it was all about the business dealings of the company but over time its focus has widened to the point where now the magazine is all about Canadian history.

Unfortunately as the years have gone on the word 'beaver' has picked up a few more connotations than it originally had. Some of connotations are not what a history magazine would want to be associated with.

And so, because of the pornographic connotations associated with the word 'beaver' and the fact that some Internet filters are blocking out the magazine's website The Beaver is now changing its name. I think it's sad when historic names like that have to be changed because the meanings that people give to certain words does change over time.

Economic change
I read a very interesting report just a little while ago about the changing face of employment and jobs in America. It seems that even though we have started back on the road to economic recover many of the jobs that were lost since the global financial crisis began will never return.

While there may be other jobs created to take their place there's no guarantee that they will be as well-paid as were the jobs that disappeared. That may mean that the income levels that we once had from selling porn may not return either.

That's definitely something we should all be thinking about as we head into this year.

Buying FriendFinder shares?
FriendFinder – the company that runs AdultFriendFinder along with a bunch of other dating sites and Penthouse Media is all set to start selling its Initial Placement Offer (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange.

The original filing for the IPO was back in December 2008 ... perhaps not the best of times ... but the amount of capital that FriendFinder wanted to raise wasn't ... and still isn't huge ... so the initial sale price of between $10 and $12 per share may prove rather attractive to investors.

It will be interesting to watch to see what the market does with what is basically an adult-related business. Money and the chance to make more of it can make even those who would normally attack the adult industry find some way of justifying their decision to buy into what is basically an adult business.

Sadly ... just like Comic Sans ... hypocrites will always be with us.
