Over the last six months or so China has really been in the news. While many countries struggled to survive the global financial crisis we all looked to China to see what was happening in the world's biggest economy.

Would it survive the global financial crisis? Would it survive socially or would it descend into anarchy as the government lost control of the people that live there? Yep lots of people around the world were looking to China to see what they future held because, if China stopped buying, then the feeling was that the rest of us were in for a very long and very cold economic winter.

Fortunately that didn't happen. Sure, there were some hiccups and for a time China's demand for raw materials did drop but now things are coming back to normal and China's economy is beginning to move along at it's frenetic pace once more. As a result even people like Steve and me are breathing a sigh of relief because low demand for resources was even going to affect people like us.

Here in adult the effect of weak demand from China would have been felt too and most of us would have noticed yet another downturn in our sales figures so it was sensible to look to China as some indicator for our future.

But now we should be looking to China for some indication about more than just our economic future. Now China is back in the news because of the way it expects web and phone companies that do business in China to censor what people view on the Web and even include in the texts that they send to one another.

Over the last year or so China has been making a real effort to block anything on the Web that could be considered even mildly pornographic. Anything that has adult content in it is blocked as China seeks to suppress anything that it considers would damage the morals of the Chinese people.

Now they're even prepared to go so far as to monitor mobile phone calls and text messages. If you were in China and they discovered that you had sent an even mildly explicit text to your wife or your girlfriend they would shut down your phone account. That's how serious the Chinese government is about keeping anything of an adult nature away from their people.

Now you may think that taking steps like that is somewhat similar to King Canute telling the tide to go back. The desire to see and enjoy sexually explicit content on the Web and racy texts on mobile phones is something that is quite normal so how could you possibly keep an entire population ... especially one that's the size of China's … from accessing whatever they wanted.

Well China seems to be managing to do that quite effectively and, with the addition of a little fear generated by stories of the imprisonment of people who try to circumvent the censorship rules, it becomes even more effective. These days China is using every ISP and every phone company to censor their own customers and those businesses are happy to do the Government's bidding.

And why is that so important for us? Why should we be looking to China for that sort of future on the Web?

Well in the past many of us thought that the religious minority in the Western world would never succeed in the efforts to have the Web censored … to have the people we sell our products to prevented from seeing the adult content that they look for. Many of us thought that it was technically impossible to achieve the level of censorship that would be required to put us out of business.

Now all we have to do is look to China to see that censorship of the Web on such a massive scale is very possible and you can bet your gonads that the religious minority are looking to China and learning the lessons that China is teaching them too.

Of course you guys who live in the United States are going to suggest that your Constitution is going to protect you and prevent the sort of censorship that we're seeing in China … but don't be so sure.

Your Supreme Court has already has a conservative majority and all it will take is for the Democrats or the Republicans to do a deal with the religious right and anything is possible.

Here in Australia we're facing a future that includes a filtered Internet … a future were some content will be totally blocked and people won't be able to access sites that don't fit Government guidelines. Our future is set to arrive sometime in the next 12 months and it's coming because a usually liberal-minded Government has done a deal with the religious right and the cost of doing that deal is Internet censorship.

So don't be surprised if it comes to your web connection … China has already proved that the web can be censored effectively and the people who want to put us out of business have seen that.

Once again, I'm not suggesting that you should instantly close down all your adult sites and leave the industry but I am suggesting that you should look at what's happening and factor that into your business plans.
