How Time Flies!
(Article Contributed By Marie, of Sex Story Text - Posted on January 29th, 2010)
Wow it's hard to believe it but January is just about over ... it hardly seems like any time at all since we were enjoying a quiet Christmas dinner.
I'm not sure where the time has gone but Steve and I seem to have been fairly busy doing a whole lot of crazy things ... all aimed at making us money of course but not all done in front of the computer.
So how about you? I know that it's winter up there in the Northern Hemisphere but have you been spending at least some time away from the computer? It can make you very stale if you haven't and even the joy of counting the dollars as they roll in can get a little boring if you're not taking time out.
The iPad appears
I suppose the biggest news this month has been the release of the iPad ... a rather unfortunate name in some respects but I'm sure that Apple's marketing machine will soon steamroll over all mention of tampons and they'll swallow up every domain they find that includes the term ‘ipad'.
I noticed on one webmaster board today that some people were suggesting that you should be grabbing domains specifically for the iPad and perhaps that will work. However I tend to think that Apple are definitely going to want to protect their brand so buying a domain name that incorporates ‘ipad' and then building a porn site on it is probably akin to paining a target on your chest and standing in front of a bunch of people with guns.
Of course I could be wrong but I'm not going to waste time and money on something that could end up in ruins after Apple has come along and jumped on it.
Converting traffic from Latin America
If you're running a small paysite and getting a lot of traffic from Latin America but you're having trouble turning it into sales then a new service launched recently by CCBill might help you make some more cash.
CCBill call it Latin America DirectPay and it's aimed at people who do not have credit cards. Under this new system surfers can use cash from their bank accounts to buy memberships in adult sites and they don't need a credit card to do it. While the program was in beta some of CCBill's clients who were testing the program saw a 10 per cent increase in income.
According to CCBill there are 175 million people in Latin America who have web access so that has the potential to be a huge market for your pay site ... if you happen to have one.
Have you tried PPC yet?
I've got to admit that I've never been a big fan of pay-per-click marketing. In the past it has seemed like a very easy way to burn a very large amount of money in a very quick time ... especially here in adult where the terms you could be bidding on may have a lot of competition.
However, yesterday I saw some figures that made my fingers just a little twitchy as I wondered if I could replicate the returns I was looking at. About a week ago a guy here in town decided that he'd like to try some online marketing ... he's currently out of work and he though that he'd try with just a small amount.
I have to say that he's not selling adult sites but he is advertising some high-paying mainstream sponsors and so far, for a very modest outlay he's making some great returns. He called me – in fact I think he had called every web designer in town but we were the only ones who had affiliate marketing experience - because he'd gone an entire day without making a sale and he was worried.
Compare this guy ... who only started a week ago and was already making money ... with the average newbie we have here in adult who sets out to make sales by building free sites and galleries. The guy I spoke to was worried because he had been making sales from day 1 and then went a whole day without making a sale. Newbies who build free sites and galleries can go for weeks without making a sale when they first start out.
So what do you tell a guy who has been making sales but then becomes worried because he went a whole day without making a sale?
Well we talked about the time of day his ads were appearing and the time of the month ... we talked about the terms he was bidding on and whether or not he needed a landing page. He certainly thought he did even though he wasn't sure what a landing page might be while I was more inclined to let him keep on sending his clicks straight to the sponsor.
He had started off advertising on MSN and was now thinking of moving over to Google while I suggested that he stick with MSN while he experimented with the wording of his ads.
Now I wonder if you or I could replicate this guy's sales. It's certainly tempting to try and in some ways it's a whole lot easier than building free sites and galleries day after day.
Maybe Steve and I will have a little play with PPC next month ... just to test the waters. Are you brave enough to try too?
