Trolls and Other Opportunities

Over on Rated Hot today I talked about trolls and the full moon and then I head over to a well-known adult message board and there's a troll trying to start trouble by calling out a couple of long-term board members.
If ever you needed an example of how the full moon seems to make some people ... especially trolls ... do strange things there you have it.
It's a sad fact of life that while the Internet has brought us many great things it's also brought us trolls ... those nasty little people who have no other purpose in life than to hide behind a nickname and stir up trouble.
As far as I'm concerned the day can't come soon enough when there's some real transparency on the Net and we can discover who the trolls are. Make it so they can't hide in dark places and they'll disappear for ever.
Of course we're not to that point just yet so we've got to put up with them for a while longer. If you're the target for some miserable troll then I do feel for you and I understand your need to bite back when one comes out to attack you but seriously ... the best thing to do with a troll is to ignore them.
If you don't give them anything to feed on they'll eventually go away and find someone who is silly enough to feed them.
Looking for other opportunities
It's quite easy when you've been working here in adult online for a year or more to think that the there's only one way to make any money and that's by selling subscriptions/memberships to our sponsors' sites. That's what we focus on day in and day out and so that's about all we see if we're looking for other money-making opportunities
Some of us will think about becoming content providers and service providers and there's still a demand in the industry for story writers, reviewers, copy writers and other services that require a lower skill set than photographers and video editors.
But there are also other ways to make money here as an email we received over the weekend reminded me. A couple of girls wrote and asked us to take a look at their used panty site to see if we would be prepared to do some search engine optimization work on it.
Now you may not realize it but there is quite a niche market out there for used panties. I'm sure the people who provide that product aren't making a fortune ... even in the good times ... but there are guys who are prepared to pay good money for that product.
Stockings and other forms of lingerie are also in demand and you would be surprised who actually buys these items. Years ago when I was in the adult industry in the real world I had guys ranging from a doctor to a building worker who were regular customers for my lingerie.
I also know of several people who make money by selling stories to guys or couples that want an erotic story written that incorporates them into the storyline. Some who provide that service even go so far as to offer the story in a hard copy complete with images that's printed on high-quality paper suitable for binding.
There are many interesting facets to human sexuality and you would be surprised at what you could produce or provide that people are prepared to pay for. Sometimes I think that the scope of products people are looking for is only limited by our imagination so if you want to make some extra money then maybe think kinky and wander through some search terms at Google to see what people are looking for.
If you've been around the industry for a while and have proven search engine optimization skills then don't be afraid to go looking for some extra work from sponsors too. Of course there are going to be those who say that if you have the skills then you should be making bank all by yourself and that's true ... to a point.
However it's very easy to become bored doing the same thing day in and day out and hiring out your SEO skills can certainly help you stay fresh as well as keeping your skills up to date as you tackle situations that are different to what you might face in your own SEO work.
And now I'm off to build and optimize a small site for someone in an industry far removed from adult. Of course the principles are the same but the detail is very different and it's going to be fun to work with this client and sometimes a change can be as good as a holiday.
