When Does it All Become Too Much?
(Article Contributed By Marie, of Sex Story Text - Posted on February 05th, 2010)
Ok so how much time did you spend online yesterday? I guess if you're a full-time webmaster the answer is going to be somewhere north of eight hours or more.
When I just popped that question on Steve he knew the answer almost immediately ... he had spent 12 hours online. Of course that's not a figure that's anything out of the ordinary in this business ... If you're working in an online industry then you're going to spend a heck of a lot of time online.
You're going to spend time in research ... you're going to spend time talking to others like yourself ... you're going to spend time uploading and submitting sites ... and you're going to spend time doing business online too. If you want to work in the online industry you just can't escape it ... you have to spend time online.
But what is all that time doing to you? In the past I've talked about the way this business takes a toll on your body and on your family and social life.
Hours spent sitting in front of the computer can damage just about every joint in your body and because we get so little exercise our health can deteriorate to the point where some of us might be in our twenties but have the organs of a very unfit 50 year old.
Hours spent sitting in front of the computer can destroy our family and social life too. Who wants to be the partner of someone who spends every waking moment working at the computer? What sort of parent are you going to be to your children if you ignore them and spend all day working?
If you spend all your time working, how long will it take before you become socially inept and perhaps even afraid of going out of your front door?
And now researchers have found another problem that people who spend all their time online have to face and that's depression.
A study done by the University of Leeds ... in the UK ... has found that the more time you spend online the more chance you have of suffering from depression. If you can't get up, walk away from the computer and go out and interact with the real world for long periods of time then you're becoming dependant on the Net and you're almost certainly headed for depression.
And depression is definitely no fun ... at its worst it can be a fog that envelopes you and clouds your thoughts and your thinking processes so that you can't make rational decisions ... and you certainly can't work. At the very least it will make you unhappy to the point where you will find it difficult to interact with others in a way that's enjoyable for you and them.
Depression is really not something you want to let into your life but ... because of the way we do business here in adult online ... that's exactly what we're doing.
But how can we limit the amount of time we spend online? For many of us it's almost a way of life and to break out of the habit or the necessity to always be in front of the computer can be very difficult ... but it can be done.
If you want to break the habit then here are a few things you should do ... every day.
Stop eating your meals in front of the computer. If you were working for a salary you would not take your meal breaks in front of the computer so now that you're working for yourself step away from the computer when you have breakfast, lunch and dinner and don't go back to the computer till you have finished your meal.
Set yourself strict working hours ... sure you may need to work longer now that you're working for yourself but don't overdo it. Don't work for 24 or 36 hours straight as some people seem to do. In the real world you might only work 8, 10 or maybe 12 hour shifts so don't work any harder than that now that you're working for yourself.
Get out of the office ... get out of the house ... get out of your street ... every chance you can get. Set yourself a daily ritual of going for coffee and don't take your laptop with you. Steve and I head down to our favorite local coffee shop almost every day and we not only get out of the house and office but we have fun with the regulars and with the staff too.
You can do the same and avoid becoming cut off socially.
If you were working out there in the real world you would be able to take weekends off so start taking them off now that you're self-employed. If you don't think you can take a whole weekend off then take half a day or more away from the computer and have fun with your family and your friends.
Get a little exercise as well. Various motor vehicle and sporting injuries have got Steve and me to the point where we can't run or jog but we can walk and that's what we do. We may not be able to keep super-fit but our bodies are in much better shape, our thinking is sharper and we're a lot fitter than you if you do no exercise at all.
Whatever you do don't think that you can't afford to follow this advice. Sure money may be tight and survival in the industry is becoming harder but if the black dog of depression comes along and bites your ass you won't be able to work and you won't be able to make money and you won't survive.
So make time every day to get away from the computer and you will survive. Stay stuck to the screen like glue and it will become all too much for your body far sooner than you might think.
