Tracking Down Relevant Keyword Phrases
(Article Contributed By Marie, of Sex Story Text - Posted on February 15th, 2010)

One of the big advantages that adult webmasters have over mainstream webmasters is that it's fairly easy to work out what keywords and keyword phrases people are searching for. In fact just about everyone knows what those basic keywords and phrases are for each niche ... or at least they think they do.

In mainstream finding the right keywords and phrases that people are using to search for what you're selling is not quite so easy. If you're selling something that lots of people are searching for it's not too hard but if you're selling something that fewer people are searching for ... or you're stuck with selling something (that can't be shipped) in a geographical region that fewer people may be interested in ... then you're going to struggle to find the right words to target.

Of course if you live in the UK or the United States your job of finding the right keywords is made easier because you can hook up with WordTracker and use their data and that can sometimes be better than trying to rely on the keyword data that Google provides via the Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

But outside of those two countries you're stuck with the information Google provides and from then on it can be a challenge to find the right terms that the people you want to target are actually typing into a search engine.

Right now we're being challenged by a client to find the right terms to target for the product they are selling. We know that Google can send some great traffic if we can pick the right terms ... but don't be fooled into thinking that by 'great traffic' we mean big numbers because we don't.

One of the key measurements for this client's site is bounce rate and when we pick the right terms the bounce rate on the client's site is well below the 30 per cent that some experts suggest is acceptable. We know that the longer a person stays on the site the more chance our client has of making a sale so for this site 'great traffic' is traffic that stays on the site.

So we're not always looking for the terms that Google suggests are getting plenty of searches. While nailing those terms can be important sometimes it's some of the terms with smaller search numbers that bring the traffic that's going to convert into buyers.

And in that example there's a lesson for adult webmasters who are trying to target the 'right' terms. There's no doubt that mixed in with all those high traffic numbers that you see for adult terms ... in just about every niche ... there are people who will part with their cash and join your sponsor's site but sometimes those terms with smaller traffic numbers are going to produce more sales than the more popular terms.

So the bottom line is that you shouldn't ignore those terms that Google says fewer people search for because more often than not those people who search for less important terms are actually refining their search before they search for those lesser terms. If you can show them that you have what they're looking for then the chances are that they'll reach for their plastic.

It would be interesting to see if those people who do refine their search might produce more income for affiliates via rev-share than by a one-off payment.

But that's just an aside ... the other important thing to think about when you research search terms is the order in which the words might appear in the keyword phrases. Just because you may assemble the words in a keyword phrase in a certain order doesn't mean that everyone else will think the same way you do and use the exact same phrase.

Let's look at some blue widgets for an example. Now you may be wanting to target the term 'blue widgets' and link it with a geographical location and you may be thinking in terms of 'blue widgets in New York' so that's the term you target because that's what you think that everyone will be searching for.

However, what if more people search for 'New York blue widgets' than 'blue widgets in New York'? You may even think that what I'm trying to say here isn't worth worrying about because there would be no difference in the search results for those two terms.

I have to admit that I didn't think there would be much of a difference either until I shuffled the words around in a fairly important search term we were looking at for a client.

Not only were the search results for 'blue widgets in New York' quite different compared to 'New York blue widgets' but more people searched for the term that I hadn't even considered when I was putting together that keyword phrase.

In our particular situation getting a good position for the term that most people searched for is going to be a lot easier than achieving a good position for the lesser term. It seems that ... for that term at least ... a lot of web professionals aren't in tune with what ordinary people are searching for.

So when you're thinking of a keyword phrase don't be afraid to juggle the words that are in the phrase ... some of the alternatives might be more popular with ordinary people than the phrase you first thought of using.
