Analyzing Site Data

Every month we dig into a whole bunch of Google Analytics reports for our mainstream clients and for several of our own mainstream sites and ... because both Steve and I are stats junkies ... we can get lost in there for hours.

It's fascinating to look at how people interact with a website and it's interesting to see how that information can help us tweak those websites to deliver the outcomes that our clients expect. Looking at some of the information you can find in Google Analytics can save you from making some serious mistakes and when mistakes can mean lost money avoiding them is very important.

So today let's have a little look at some interesting information we're seeing from the Google Analytics we've got installed on one of our more popular mainstream sites. This site is one that picks up traffic from both Australia and the United States and the subject matter is one that will interest a lot of guys from a fairly diverse range of backgrounds.

The stats we're looking at relate to the last 30 days.

Browsers
Would you believe that for the very first time we're seeing more Firefox users hitting the site than those who use Internet Explorer? Well that's what we're seeing ... but before you get too excited I have to say that the difference between the two browsers is not statistically significant ... yet.

What is more significant is that nearly 17 percent of Internet Explorer users are still visiting the site via IE6. Yep, despite all the noise that has been around some mainstream sites lately about encouraging people to ditch IE6 there are still plenty of people who are using it.

From what other experts suggest most IE6 users are those who are surfing the Web from where they work. Now I don't know whether that's right or not but if it is then that 16.73 percent figure of people using IE6 is important to us here in adult. Check your server stats for the time of day when your bandwidth spikes and you may find that spike is during office hours in the United States.

If your traffic spike is during office hours then you're getting a lot of IE6 users visiting your site so you need to have your marketing sites set up to render well in that horrible old browser. If you don't then you're just leaving money on the table

Screen Resolutions
Over the last 30 days there were 206 different screen resolutions used to view our site ... 206! Of course you really can't cater for all of those when you're designing a website but you can cater for the major ones and ensure that people really don't have to scroll sideways.

I know a lot of people don't seem to bother about that sideways scroll but when it's so easy to do so why wouldn't you bother taking the few extra minutes to get it right in all the major screen resolutions?

And what are the major screen resolutions? Well more visitors hit our site with a screen resolution of 1024x768. Yes, I know that's been around for some years now but the stats are quite clear that 1024x768 is still the most popular resolution.

Not too far behind that aging screen size is 1280x800 and that's followed by 1280x1024 and 1440x900.

So what are people seeing when they hit your sites? Are they seeing everything neatly set out and the only scrolling they have to do is the usual scroll down the page or have you got some important information that your surfers will only see if they bother to scroll to the right?

Operating Systems
As you would expect Windows is the outright leader when it comes to operating systems and if you're a Mac guy and think that lots of people use the Mac operating system then it's time to stop being delusional ... but at least you're probably not as delusional as the Linux people.

On the site we've been looking at 85.44 percent of visitors use Windows as their operating system. Only 7.54 percent used any of the Mac operating systems and Linux accounted for less than 2 percent of the operating systems. In fact more people visited the site using the iPhone operating system than those who used Linux.

Flash
Did you know that there are at least 40 different versions of Flash? Well there must be, because 40 different versions of Flash were recorded by Google Analytics from the information it recorded as visitors hit the site.

And that's as far as I'm going with what our analytics showed us. There's a lot of information in there that will help you design more effective sites if only you're prepared to take the time to cater for the real people who visit your websites and not just for what you think those people are like.
