Are You Making an Effort?

Last week I went to a couple of mainstream product launches ... pretty boring stuff really but it was interesting to see what different mainstream marketers would do with what are very similar products. They were run by different companies in the same vertical and it was interesting to compare the launches to each other.

One launch was over and done with in a couple of hours ... there wasn't a great deal of expenditure on anything really. Everyone who attended got a cup of coffee and a few nibbles ... a hand-out that outlined the product ... and a very short period of time to actually touch, feel and play with the product and then it was all over and everyone was going home.

Oh, they did show a short video about the product but the master of ceremonies managed to stand in front of the screen while it was playing so that most people couldn't see the video as it was played.

A couple of days later I was back at the other product launch. It went all day and we were given dinner the night before, breakfast and lunch and all we could drink. There were presentations ... videos that everyone could see ... a chance to talk to the production team ... and a lot of time to touch and play with the product. We even got handouts although they weren't quite up to the standard of what was handed out at the first product launch.

One company has a great reputation in the marketplace and people love their products. The other company has a name and reputation that is good and getting better but they're not at the same level as the first company ... yet. That's not because their products are inferior but more because they're a relatively late-comer to the marketplace.

So which company do you think gave the short presentation and which one gave the longer presentation? Which company put more effort into trying to sell their product and which company kind of threw it out there in the hope that people would pick it up and run with it?

Perhaps the more important question might be along the lines of which company has grown fat and bloated and which company is lean and hungry and interested in impressing the people that they think can help sell their products?

If you thought that maybe the company that was well-entrenched in the marketplace was the one that gave the short no-frills presentation you would be right ... they did and it was definitely no-frills. It was the company who wants to outsell the first company that gave the more interesting ... more informative ... presentation and also gave us more time with the product.

Now they may not overtake their bigger competitor this year but just so long as one company wants to trade on its reputation while the other wants to build on it's reputation it won't be long before the big company is going to be wondering what caused it to start losing sales.

At the first product launch everyone was interested in the product but at the second product launch the same group of people were all talking about how great the product we were looking at really was. That's not good news for the bigger company because many of those at both product launches were real influencers and if you don't impress them then you're going to fail miserably.

So what are you doing with your websites to make sales? Are you giving the people who come to your sites the short ... basically boring introduction to the product you're selling? Are you basically just throwing it out there in the hope that someone will pick it up and actually buy it?

Or are you putting 100 percent effort into every site you build and making every effort to make a sale with every web page you produce? Are you making a real effort to make money or have you just dropped into some sort of automated loop where every site and every web page you build looks the same and has the selling ability of a pile of steaming dog poo?

I guess only you will know what's reflected in your hits to sales ratios but hopefully you'll wake up to the fact that you can't trade on any reputation you might have had previously. You've got to take very site ... whether it be a free site, a gallery or even a full-blown paysite ... as a chance to impress your visitors and get them worked up to the point where they want to buy a membership.

If you're not prepared to make that level of effort with everything you do then you may as well pack up and leave the industry now because that's what you'll be doing sooner rather than later.
