The Secret to Success

It's Friday and that means the weekend stretches before us. Now I know that I've said several times now that Steve and I were really going to try and take at least some of each weekend off but somehow that doesn't look like it's going to happen this weekend.
Instead there are blogs to be updated and upgraded, clients to meet with and a stack of work to try and get through before we get into next week. I suppose we might have been able to take some time off if we weren't so intent on growing bigger ... but then we might not have still been in business if we had stayed the way we were.
As I mentioned over on Rated Hot last week ... if you really want to survive in this or just about any other business you have to keep on growing. Businesses that don't grow stagnate and die and in an industry like this one ... where things are constantly changing ... the time between stagnation and death is very short indeed.
Even the CEO of one of the world's biggest car makers agrees with the idea that you either grow your business or you watch it die. Early this week he said that you either "go big or you go away" and he's determined to grow his company even bigger than what it is now.
So for us it's growth even if that means that sometimes we have more work on than the staff we have can handle and if that means that Steve and I work weekends well so be it.
Of course if you want to be able to grow and react to new situations as they arise you really do have to be flexible. Sometimes that can be quite scary ... especially if you have to drop something that you've been doing for years just so you can free up some time or resources to take on the new challenge.
But then let's face it ... you wouldn't be in business for yourself if you were scared to take on new challenges. Although sometimes you can get into a comfortable rut with your business and getting out of it can be scary and hard to do.
Just at the moment Steve and I are looking at dropping some of the things we do and moving in some new directions. We've already made some decisions and done some things that can't be reversed and, even though they seemed scary as we were reaching the time when we would have to make those irreversible decisions, I was surprised to find that at the point when a final decision had to be made I didn't hesitate.
Now that the decision is made and we've done those things that can't be undone we're not going to waste time looking back and wishing we hadn't done what we did. Now is the time to move forward and pursue the opportunities that are there in the new direction we want to move in.
So if you're looking at your business slowly beginning to contract start thinking about new areas that you can expand into. Once you have a grounding in web design and online marketing there are plenty of directions that you can take your business so don't be afraid to make those decisions ... you never know what might be waiting for you just around the corner
Just recently, when we made a decision about taking our business in a new direction, we weren't quite sure how we would make contact with the people who might want what we could provide. Sure, we had a few contacts and once they discovered that we really could deliver what we promised they were happy to recommend us to other.
Then some of those others introduced us to yet more people and suddenly, in an economy where other's who provide a similar service to what we do are struggling, our business is moving along at a fast rate.
Perhaps we were lucky ... perhaps it was just the hard work that we were prepared to put into getting that part of our business off the ground ... perhaps it was because we were persistent and weren't going to admit defeat ... perhaps it was all of those things.
Whatever it was it was nothing unique to us. You too can be persistent ... you too can work hard and everyone makes their own luck so you too can be lucky ... if you want to be.
You just need to have a burning desire to succeed and you can do it ... whatever 'it' might be. And that's the secret to success ... a burning desire that you're not scared to unleash.
