This and That on a Monday
(Article Contributed By Marie, of Sex Story Text - Posted on June 07th, 2010)
There's big news here in Australia at the moment about the arrest of a man who allegedly defaced several Facebook pages. Now on the surface that doesn't sound like such a big deal but the facts are interesting and there's an underlying message here that we shouldn't ignore.
Earlier this year, in the state where I live, there were two unrelated instances of young people being attacked and killed. Both were very tragic but one is guaranteed to send shivers down the spine of any parent. The victim in that case was just eight years old and was taken from her bedroom in the middle of the night while her parents slept in the room next door. She was ultimately murdered.
Friends set up a tribute page on Facebook only to find that some low-life came along and defaced it with images of kp and messages that showed what a very sick mind some people have. The images and messages were quickly removed but not before a lot of people were exposed to some very disturbing content.
Shortly after that the second tragic event took place and the victim's friends also set up a tribute page on Facebook. Once again the page was defaced with images of kp and messages that no normal person would want to read. The second page was cleaned up fairly quickly and that's where everyone thought the story would end.
But not so ... late last week police announced that they had made an arrest and now the accused is being held in jail for his own protection. While all the details of how the police managed to trace this sicko are yet to be released it seems that the police received a lot of support and assistance from Facebook and with the information that Facebook supplied were able to track down the person who defaced those pages.
That's definitely one for the good guys and it's a warning to anyone who thinks that they can do the sort of evil things this guy did and get away with it. The message is that you can be traced and the police will come knocking on your door.
Pssst ... wanna buy a bridge?
There's some more big news here in Australia that involves the police but this time they're not dealing with a sick mind ...this time they've been asked to investigate none other than Google.
Sadly I doubt that we will have the same positive outcome but it is possible that we may see Google taken down a peg or two.
While there have been a lot of people who have been concerned about the way Google gathers information about us no one has ever done much about it and Google has been allowed to go on its merry way. But when they admitted to tapping into people's wifi connections and sucking down all the information they could get they might have gone too far.
At least it looks as though they've gone too far here in Australia because the government has called in the police to investigate. Of course Google claims that it was an honest mistake, they only wanted information about people's wifi connections and they never wanted to suck down all that personal information.
It was all a big mistake ... it was never meant to have happened ... they didn't know that they would get all that information ... they're really sorry and it's never going to happen again.
And if you believe that then I've got this wonderful bridge out in the middle of the desert that I can let you have for just a few million bucks. Send it to me via PayPal and the bridge will be yours!
Do you really think that Google didn't know that the system they had fitted to those camera cars wasn't going to gulp down every shred of information it could get as it drove by every house in the street? Do you really think that Google didn't test the system before they sent it out?
And do you really think that Google had this Pollyanna view of the world where every wifi is locked down so tight that they would get none of the information that they did?
Don't feel bad if you do believe that ... on Twitter I've seen lots of very smart people who either haven't thought through the situation or truly believe that Google does no evil.
Sadly I'm a bit more cynical than that and while that sometimes adds a nasty color to my view of the world it does often save me from being suckered into something that's not going to be all that good for me.
Of course you're entitled to believe what you want about Google and Google's intentions but don't forget ... I've got that bargain bridge for sale and it can be yours today.
