A Friday Brain Dump

Wow how did it get to be Friday already? I think I woke up this morning still thinking that it was Wednesday and now I find that I'm suddenly looking at a long weekend stretching before me.
Just for a few moments there I really had some wicked thoughts of making it even longer by taking today off but they didn't last long. I could take today off ... we're at one of those points in our client-work where we could sneak in an extra day off but ...
Oh well if I have to work then at least I can do things today that are really enjoyable and maybe today's column doesn't have to be about anything too serious either. Maybe today I can get you thinking about some other ways to make money here in adult now that people are REALLY beginning to feel the drag of all that free stuff that's been allowed to escape onto the Net.
Just for a moment though let me be a bit serious and talk about all that free stuff that's out there on the Net these days. While every one of us has to take some responsibility for that situation you do have to wonder why the paysite owners didn't do more to keep their premium content from escaping.
I know that the record companies get a lot of bad-press for what they're doing to protect their copyright material but you have to admit that they're shutting down the file sharing sites and inflicting a lot of financial pain on people and music sharing is decreasing.
Perhaps if our industry had been prepared to do more to protect our assets we might not be in the predicament we're in now. Unfortunately it's all a bit late for that now and so we've got to look at other ways of making money and that leads me to what my brain has been thinking about.
Why can't we have some adult online games?
If you've ever played Farmville, Mafia Wars or Island Paradise on Facebook ... or any of the other online games that are somewhat similar ... you will know that they tend to suck you in. You get involved ... you keep going back to them because you want to succeed ... you want to win even though there's no real prize for being the best at whatever game it is you're playing.
So why can't we have some adult games? I have no idea what form they could take or how players might progress through the various levels but there's no reason why an adult game can't have as much ... if not more ... attraction for people as games such as Farmville do.
Oh sure ... there's the issue of the game being adult and you can't have hardcore adult games out there where kids can play them even though you do need to have some part of the game available for everyone to play just so you can attract people. But the mainstream games that are already being played have solved that problem for us.
Those mainstream games can be played for free ... but if you really want to get ahead and not be easy pickings for many of the other players then you need to buy some credits so that you have more money to spend.
If we wanted to carry that idea over to an adult game then there could be a very softcore version available for free and if you wanted to play the hardcore version then it's time to reach for your credit card. That not only solves the problem of keeping kids out of a hardcore game but also generates the income that we're looking for.
Of course the game not only has to get hardcore but it's got to get even more rewarding and engaging once a person has paid to go to the next level in the game so that they continue to spend money to play the game. Perhaps one way to keep them engaged would be to give players the opportunity to advance into legal fetishes that might really interest them.
With Flash games just about anything is possible so maybe it's time to test the waters with some genuinely adult games ... it's just a thought.
And now I'm off to test my brain by designing another directory ... there was a time when many people thought that small local directories were dead in the water but it seems that they were wrong. At least that's what our experience seems to suggest.
