Oh wow it's hump day already ... how good is that! Yes, I know that I shouldn't be surprised by what day of the week it happens to be but I've had my head down working for the last few days and time has just flown by.
I haven't been doing anything terribly exciting but I've just been having fun digging into some designs for a new site for a client and adding some stuff to a site I built for my sister that will help her grow her business even more. Perhaps I'm becoming more mature but those things really do excite me these days.
I'm also beginning to get excited about HTML5 and CSS3 and when I see comments from designers on Twitter like "I've just dropped Photoshop because I can get it all done in CSS3" I definitely want to know more.
Of course, at the moment there are lots of people out there who are using Internet Explorer in all of its variations and a lot of HTML5 and CSS3 things won't work on IE but that's no reason why we shouldn't at least know what's happening.
I think that in the past I sometimes looked at new advances in CSS and decided that if they didn't work in IE then I wasn't interested in them and that was a definite mistake. Now I'm often playing catch-up because those things that didn't work now do and I don't know how to incorporate them in my site designs.
If, like me, you've not been keeping up with the developments in HTML5 until now then head over to html5demos.com and have a look at some of the things you can achieve in HTML5. Be sure to view source to see how easy it is to drop some of those effects into a web page without needing to embed anything fancy like a video player.
Developers are already looking at taking web designs way beyond anything you might imagine using HTML5 and there's an interesting video over on YouTube that will show you some of the things that Sports Illustrated is going to do with HTML5 and their online magazine.
Imagine having a video that sits inside a text area on the page and plays ... think of turning an ad into content but not as we do it. Instead, the ad blends in with the content and it becomes almost impossible to identify where the content ends and the advertising begins.
Now all we have to do is look at ways we can engage our market and increase our sales through the use of such technology ... and also how we're going to show our marketing message to those who are still stuck on older browsers that don't support it.
That was something that Steve was discussing with a mainstream businessman yesterday. They were comparing data on how many people were using older browsers when visiting hobby sites that they both ran with browser data that we had from some of our clients' sites.
It was surprising that the number of people using IE to surf some of those sites was almost the same as the number of people who were using Firefox but when it came to the hobby sites the numbers were very different. This is a hobby that is mostly enjoyed by guys who are a little older and the browser figures there were heavily weighted in favor of IE ... much to Steve's disgust.
When you're confronted with technology that will do wonderful things for your website it's not hard to lose sight of the fact that those people who use IE probably not going to see what you would like to show them.
It's also a bit scary when you see that technology because ... even though it may not be cross-browser compatible now ... there will come a time when it is and when that time comes how will you compete with those who have more money ... more time ... more people ... to throw at a website to ensure that it really does engage the surfers.
If there's just you battling on all alone you may not be able to compete with them so now is the time to be looking ahead and trying to see what your options may be.
One of the possibilities that we're vaguely toying with is the idea of an online magazine. Now I'm sure that there have been many attempts to translate print magazines into something online and none of them have done particularly well but somewhere inside both Steve and I there's an urge to try something similar but different ... something with all the inter-active possibilities that HTML5 has to offer.
When IE has finally caught up to the rest of the world something like an online magazine just might work. So how are you going to incorporate this new technology into your money-making efforts online?
