This and That on a Friday

You know, life can be so unfair. Steve and I are often up by 4am but today I didn't really have to get out of my nice warm bed before 5.30 ... so the phone decided to ring at 3am and that was the end of any thought of sleeping in till a more reasonable hour.
At least I can get an early start on the day but I am going to be so wiped out by this afternoon.
Taxes
Aren't they just so fascinating? Our tax year here in Australia is different to what you guys in America have to deal with so we're just coming up to the end of our tax year. That means that I've been spending quite a bit of time lately catching up on the taxation part of the bookkeeping for our business.
Because we do affiliate marketing as well as normal business type things what we can and can't claim for is a little different to most businesses but it's not as different as you might think.
If you're new to affiliate marketing then don't think that your tax filings are going to be so different ... and so difficult ... to complete that you should put it off. Instead, head over to YouTube and do a search for a video with the title of 'Managing Taxes for Affiliate Marketers' by Shawn Collins ... if you live in the United States you may find it very helpful.
HTML5 and IE
Back on Wednesday I talked about some of the great things you could now do with HTML5 ... just so long as all your visitors were using some current browser other than IE. As usual Internet Explorer is way behind the other browsers and lots of those cool things that you can do with HTML5 ... including adding video without needing a player ... just can't be done in the IE8.
However there is some good news today from Microsoft. The latest Platform Preview version of what will be Internet Explorer 9 adds many of those HTML5 features that we would love to see and the rumor is that this will be the last Platform Preview version before Internet Explorer 9 goes live.
Of course our problems won't be over even when it does go live ... I mean we're still using hacks to get CSS2 to work in Internet Explorer 6 because a large number of people are still using that archaic version. But we are at least one small step closer to being able to do some very cool things in our web pages ... at least we will be if Microsoft leaves those HTML5 features in the public release of Internet Explorer 9.
Personalized Search and SEO
Yesterday on Rated Hot I talked about a problem that some webmasters are experiencing that really does have them puzzled. During the Google updates that ran through the end of April and into the beginning of May they lost their search engine rankings but now they've come back.
You might think that was cause for some rejoicing but some webmasters are just never happy. These guys may have got their rankings back but they didn't get their traffic back and they want to know why. There are any number of reasons why the traffic may not have come back even though their rankings have been restored and I looked at some of those yesterday.
One of the reasons that traffic may not have returned could be that personalized search is changing the way search engine results pages appear. In short what you see may not be what I see even though we've searched for exactly the same term.
Of course that then raises the question of how do you perform search engine optimization on a web page that will work in a personalized search environment. It's a good question that I don't have any answer to but noted Canadian SEO, Dave Harry, has some thoughts on it over at SearchEngineJournal.com. If his article isn't on the front page when you arrive you can find it by doing a search for 'adapting SEO for personalized search'.
It's way too early in the morning for my muddled brain to make any sense of it but you can be sure that I'll be looking at it after I've downed at least two cups of coffee.
And that's where I'm going to leave you today ... I really am going in search of coffee ... oh and milk. We ran out last night so I'm off to the only store in this town that's going to be open at 4am.
