The .xxx TLD Returns and Future Marketing
(Article Contributed By Marie, of Sex Story Text - Posted on June 28th, 2010)

So here we are again talking about the .xxx TLD ... only this time it seems that ICANN has decided that giving porn sites their own top level domain has merit.

The whole .xxx thing has been around for some years now so it's really nothing new. There have been some big names in this industry that have supported the idea and there have been a lot of little people who have never wanted to see the day come when .xxx would be approved.

For the guys who were supporting the introduction of .xxx it's always been about money. Oh of course they say that it isn't but the fact is that they've had that top level domain all carved up before they ever made the idea public.

If we're all eventually going to be forced to move our adult domains to that TLD then what better way to make money than by already owning the big-value domain names before people began looking to replace their old .com domains with the corresponding .xxx domain names?

Of course it's not mandatory at the moment for adult site owners to move their domains across to the .xxx TLD even though some major American news sources are claiming that it is. At the moment the .xxx TLD will only be available for adult sites if we want to use it ... there's going to be no force applied to us to move our domains but that time will come.

Before too long we'll begin to see a push by some of those in authority to have all adult sites over in the .xxx TLD and even though the religious nutters didn't like the idea of .xxx domains when it was first suggested it won't take long for them to see the advantages.

And there's definitely one major advantage for our opposition if we are all confined in the .xxx TLD ... an advantage that those in our industry who support the idea of .xxx domains refuse to acknowledge. When .com domains are closed to adult sites and all our domains have been moved to the .xxx TLD it will be much easier for filters to be applied at the ISP level that will prevent people from seeing our sites.

That will be the easiest solution for any government who wants to prevent our sites from being seen in their countries and you can bet that the industry will contract. But by then our industry leaders who first suggested the .xxx TLD won't care ... they will have made their money and moved on.

I'm sure that you can read between the lines here and see quite plainly that I don't like the idea of an all-adult TLD. While there may be some advantage in keeping kids out of our sites by grouping us all together I don't see that as a real step forward for society.

While we certainly shouldn't be letting kids see our hardcore content trying to hide human sexuality in all of its normal healthy variations behind some artificial wall is not good ... it only creates more problems than it solves. Sadly though those who like to impose their twisted view of the world on everyone else will never understand that.

The future of marketing?
I have to admit that I came late to Facebook and I'm probably not your average user. I don't join groups ... I don't post a lot of pictures ... and I certainly don't try to have more friends than any other person on the planet.

I also have to admit that I'm not a big fan of Twitter. I am there but I hardly ever open my Twitter client and the few people who might want to contact me via Twitter all know that they can get to me through Steve ... he's a much bigger Twitter user than I am.

So I'm almost certainly not one of those who Facebook or Twitter users who buy a lot of stuff online. According to a couple of recent studies that seems to put me in the minority for it has now become apparent that Facebook and Twitter users spend 1.5 times more online than the average Internet user.

Now that would be more than just an interesting statistic if selling stuff through either of those mediums was easy but it's not. On Facebook you're probably going to burn through a lot of money for clicks from people that are just kicking your tires while on Twitter you're going to have to develop a large number of followers and spend a lot of time engaging them in conversation before they're going to want to buy what you're selling.

I'm not saying that you can't make money on either Facebook or Twitter but the streets there aren't paved with gold and it will take time and money. However, at the moment, when you think about it that looks like where the future of marketing might be.
