It's Time to Expand
(Article Contributed By Marie, of Sex Story Text - Posted on July 05th, 2010)
Is the day of the small-time affiliate marketer drawing to a close? That's a question that Steve and I have been thinking about for quite some time now and there have been signs around that perhaps that day is getting a whole lot closer.
Now that's not to say that we're about to see the end of the solo affiliate marketer because we're not. There are still plenty of solo operators out there who have built up their business over the last few years and gone beyond just building sites themselves. These are guys who have others working for them ... who use technology to help them work a whole lot smarter rather than harder and who can churn out plenty of content every day.
But there are still a lot of small-time marketers who build and submit everything themselves and they're the ones who may soon find themselves in a position where the returns are far less than the effort they put in every day. Maybe these people are still relatively new to the industry or maybe they've not wanted to grow bigger but whatever the reason these are the ones who are going to find it harder to make real money in the future.
So if you're one of those who have either only ever worked alone or not been in the industry for all that long then what can you do to lift your income level without working yourself into an early grave?
Well as far as I can see there are two things that you can do to put yourself in a better position to face the future. You can start employing people to do the grunt work ... and so free up your own time so that you can start developing your business ... or you can go into partnership with others who are in a similar situation to you.
Now before you start thinking that I'm suggesting that you move out of your home office and into something bigger for all those people you're going to employ or for the partnership you're going to form with someone else let me tell you that's the last thing I would suggest.
Remember, businesses that have the best chance of survival are the ones that boost their income but keep their costs down to an absolute minimum and opening up an office to house the people who are going to work for you is not going to keep your costs down.
Instead of opening an office what you need to do is employ others who will work from their homes and you need to use the Internet to keep in touch with them ... co-ordinate their work ... and keep them focused.
The same applies if you're able to work in partnership with another adult webmaster. You don't need to even be in the same country as each other because the Internet gives you the ability to stay in touch and work closely together even though you may be thousands of miles apart. Several years ago working remotely with other people wasn't quite as easy as it is today. Back then there weren't as many handy tools available but these days there are plenty and I'll give you some links to just few.
One of the tools that Steve and I find really invaluable is Dropbox ... dropbox.com. If I make some amendments or alterations to a file here at the office that we're both working on and then put it into the Dropbox folder it's automatically transferred to the Dropbox folder on Steve's computer in his office at home and the computer in my office at home at the same time.
I don't have to take the time to upload it to our server so Steve can download it ... I don't have to remember to take it home with me on a USB stick ... Dropbox just updates everything automatically. The other good thing about Dropbox is that there's a free option ... and even the paid option isn't very expensive.
Bounce ... bounceapp.com ... is another tool that should be really handy for people who are working remotely. This little app allows you to make notes or add feedback as an overlay on a website and then share them with your partner or the people who are working for you.
If you want to build out a large site with your partner but you're both having trouble coming to grips with the navigation and site architecture then Instant Blueprint allows you to create a project framework that you can then send to your partner. Something like that sure beats trying to describe a complex site plan over the phone or ICQ.
So if you really want to take your business beyond where it's at right now ... and stand a much better chance of surviving well into the future ... then it's time to expand. It's time to look at working in partnership with others or employing others and there are plenty of tools online that will make it easier for you to work online with others.
