The Top of the Heap

There are some days when you reach a point where you just want to scream. For me it it's one of those days that time usually comes somewhere around mid-morning to late afternoon but not today ... today I've hit that point and it's not even 7.30am.
Today I've not only encountered an incredible level of incompetence in another local web designer ... one who likes to charge their clients huge amounts of money and deliver nothing but a mess ... but I've also encountered it in a Government web designer who has delivered a complex site where half the damn internal links 404 back to the front page.
Maybe I'm old fashioned ... maybe I'm plain stupid and my business ethics are out-dated but I just couldn't produce a site like either of the two I mentioned above and then hold my hand out for payment.
I know that the local guy doesn't understand the concept of working with a client so that they'll come back for more ... he's after the fast buck and hasn't bothered to think for even a second about what the future holds for him in a small town like this.
So maybe he's got an excuse but what excuse does the guy who works for the Government have? Is he hoping that the site is so complex that no one will actually notice that all those internal links ... links that are supposed to point to further information that site visitors will find important ... don't actually go anywhere?
Maybe it's time I went into Steve's office and raided his stash of blood pressure medication and take about double what his daily dose is because I think I'm probably going to need some today.
The top 1000 websites
As we all know, there are millions and millions of websites out there in cyberspace but which ones are at the very top of the heap ... which sites have the most visitors? Well if you want to know that then Google can help you. Isn't that so nice of Google?
Just head for google.com/adplanner/static/top1000/ and all shall be revealed to you grasshopper. Actually all is not revealed because Google doesn't appear anywhere in that list so there is a very slight question about the accuracy of that list ... but it does make for some interesting reading.
Apart from Google not appearing in that list you might be surprised by some of those that actually rank in the top 100 and I have to say that there are a few on that list that I've never heard of. There are also a few sites in the top 100 that I would have thought were more popular than others that rank above them.
It's also interesting to look at the way a graph of the top 1000 sites looks. There's quite a gradual climb in unique visitor numbers from the site at the bottom of the list till you get to the top three or four sites and then the graph goes straight up into the stratosphere ... but then I guess 540 million unique visitors will do that for you.
Yep that's what Facebook gets but by number five on the list you're getting down to more manageable numbers ... numbers like 280 million for MSN. And then when you're way down at the very bottom of the list you're looking at several sites that are getting around 3.8 million visitors a month.
Now wouldn't it be nice to be looking at traffic numbers like that? Even if you are just playing the numbers game you would have to be totally incompetent not to make a tidy living out of the advertising you could place on a site with those numbers.
Of course coping with that many visitors would take a lot of work but just think of the returns ... think of the cash flow and the profit. Doesn't it make your mouth water? Doesn't it arouse your interest just a little? Doesn't it make you want to go beyond the daydreams and at least start to think about what you would have to do to make it happen for you?
If it doesn't get you even just a little bit excited then maybe it's time for you to give up right now because there's every chance that you're never going to survive. There was a time ... a few years ago ... when you could come in, stay small and survive but those days are gone. The world's changed and the game has got very serious.
Now if you're aim isn't to grow beyond being a basic affiliate marketer then you won't survive. You may not ever reach the top of the heap but if you don't try the system will chew you up and spit you out and no one but you will care.
