Writing ... It's More Than Just Words
(Article Contributed By Marie, of Sex Story Text - Posted on July 12th, 2010)

So it's Monday and I'm down at the office early but of course that doesn't actually mean that I'm awake ... yet. I'm sure I will become fully alert at some time today but right now it's just not happening.

I'm not even sure that it happened at all over the weekend. I know I looked as though I was awake and I did conduct some sensible conversations with Steve and some of our friends in town but then ...

At one stage on Sunday I rushed into Steve's office all excited because I had just bought two absolutely killer domain names. When I told Steve what they were he looked at me a bit strangely and then asked if I was sure I had actually bought those two domains.

Of course I was sure ... well at least I was until Steve mentioned that they were actually the domain names of one of our mainstream clients. That left me kind of gob-smacked so I went back to my office to check and found that what I had registered were two typos of the domain names I had wanted ... and sadly they weren't even two good typos.

See what I mean about not necessarily being awake?

Over on the blog you will find at getelastic.com there's a very interesting post entitled "The 4 Pillars of Ecommerce Copywriting" and even if you're not into e-commerce it's something that's definitely worth reading. It certainly has a lot of relevance for people in our industry because all too often people in this industry have a very skewed view of words and just how important they are.

The author of that blog post suggests that the four pillars of good copy for e-copywriting are writing for usability, writing to persuade, writing to build trust and writing for search engine optimisation. That's the order that the author puts them in and that's a very important point because so many people in this industry get their priorities wrong when it comes to text on their web pages.

We've been writing text for web pages for clients for years now and we're often asked to quote on jobs where the person who owns the website wants us to provide text that will attract the search engines. That's what they see as important and that's what they want us to focus on.

They don't want us to consider anything else but text that will attract the search engines. They have a clear idea of how that text should look ... how many times the keywords and keyword phrases should be used, where they should be used and they're sure that the only way to rank for those important phrases is to include them in the body of the text as complete phrases.

It doesn't matter to them if that makes the text on the pages sound rather strange and maybe even completely unreadable. It doesn't matter to them if what they end up with is sales text that wouldn't sell a glass of water to a thirsty man. All they want is text that they're sure will make their sites rank well in the search engines for those particular phrases.

When we see requests for quotes that want that sort of work both Steve and I tend to cringe ... it's not the sort of work we want to do because we know that it's not going to have the impact or the outcomes that the person asking for the quote really wants.

What they think they want is a page that ranks above all others in the major search engines. That's their prime objective but what happens when they get what they want? Will their sales increase? Will they make more money than they've ever made before?

Will the money they've invested in paying someone to write the text be a good investment or will it be a complete waste of money?

Well the chances are that it's going to be a complete waste of money. Sure they're probably going to get a great ranking in the search engines and they're probably going to get a whole bunch of clicks from the search engine listings to their web pages but what happens then?

Then they get people hitting their page who are really interested in having a closer look at what the page is selling but those people are then being shown a page that makes little sense ... has almost no ability to sell anything ... and is nothing more than an invite to immediately use the back button.

Writing the text for a page that is going to make you money is more than just words ... because a web page that is going to make you money needs a lot more than just a good search engine ranking to succeed.

A web page that will make you money needs to do a whole lot more than just rank well in the search engines and it needs to do those other things even before you need to start thinking about how to make it rank well in the search engines.
