So You Want to Make a Million Bucks?
(Article Contributed By Marie, of Sex Story Text - Posted on July 14th, 2010)
Recently Steve and I had dinner with a friend and his wife. He had just started a new job as the office manager in a business that had exploded onto the scene a few months back. He though that we might have been able to give him some help in understanding the dynamics of that particular business because we had designed their website.
Actually when I heard that our friend had got the job with this business I knew that he would be calling us sooner rather than later because this is a business that has gone from nothing to a very large undertaking in an incredibly short period of time.
Now that may sound as though it would be a rather exciting and interesting place to be working ... and it should be ... but it's not. While the guy who started the business is out there growing his business in six different directions all at the same time the groundwork that needs to be done to sustain that growth ... the boring stuff ... the details ... is not being done and nobody who works there has a real grasp of what's happening.
So from the outside the business looks strong and vibrant but on the inside it's just a shell. The work that needs to be done to support that growth is not happening because it just doesn't interest the entrepreneur who started the business. Our friend was hired to make that happen but trying to get his head around the business is hard because his boss doesn't know how to stop for long enough to explain things to him.
Sadly if the framework to support that exciting stuff that's happening doesn't get built soon then the business is going to come crashing down.
So if you want to make a million bucks what are you doing with your business? Are you spending all your time out there pushing your business into new and exciting areas? Are you driven by a need to tackle new things without taking the time to build a framework to support all that expansion you want to achieve?
Yes, I know that it's boring ... I know that dealing with the details is a total drag and it's lots more fun to be out there working on the big picture but sometimes that's what you've got to do. Sometimes you have to stop looking at the big picture and focus on the detail.
Sometimes you've got to deal with little things like buying pens and paper ... keeping your tax records up to date ... ensuring that you're cash flow is actually happening and you're not trying to exist on nothing but the air you're breathing.
The businesses that do explode onto the scene and survive to grow even more are the ones that have been built on a firm foundation that will support the growth you want to make happen. The businesses that do survive are the ones whose owners have taken the time to deal with those boring details and haven't focused entirely on the dreams of expansion.
Of course you don't always have to focus on those details yourself ... you can employ people to handle them for you ... but you can't expect them to hit the ground running. You will have to take time to come down from your dreams of untold wealth through expansion and talk to the people you hire about the details.
And if you really are thinking about hiring people to handle the tasks that you find boring then there's an interesting piece of advice that some very smart person once gave ... "always hire people who are smarter than you". There's also a little addition to that piece of advice that's very important.
If you're going to hire people who are smarter than you then always listen to the advice that they might give you. I know quite a few people who have failed despite having followed that first piece of advice and hired smart people. They failed because they never bothered to listen to the people they had hired.
You know, having a dream of expanding your business and making a million bucks isn't a bad thing. You just have to support that dream by getting all the boring fundamentals right because if you don't then you won't have anything to support that dream and it will ultimately crumble into dust.
And now after all that profound advice I think I need a coffee and some chocolate. Fortunately I've got both right here in the office because there's someone here who handles the fundamentals.
Once I've lightened up a bit I'm going to have to see a potential client and tell him that his dreams of making a million bucks by building an online business based on a free website builder are never going to become reality. I wonder if he'll listen.
