Telling Themselves Your Story

Over on Rated Hot today I gave out some tips on sales text ... you know, those important words that are really going to do all the hard work on getting your site visitors to the point where they'll buy what you're selling. That's something that no amount of images can do.
Oh sure, images do play their part in getting people to the point where they're keen to buy your product but when it comes to porn let's face it ... if you've seen two people bonking then there's only so many times that the sight of different people bonking is going to excite you to the point where you'll buy a membership.
Sometimes though ... when a new niche is discovered ... images to have a very strong influence on getting someone to the point where they will buy but when was the last time you came across a new niche to promote?
So these days you've got to go beyond images if you want to have the best chance of making a sale. Hmmm ... maybe 'beyond' is the wrong word to use there ... maybe I should be saying that you need to go back to text to make a sale.
But what words ... what text ... do you use to encourage people to buy something? Do you go right over the top and make outlandish claims about your product? Well of course you can but the marketplace is much more sophisticated these days and even a hint of bullshit will destroy the credibility of your message.
Do you write a long and involved sales pitch in the hope that people will become so wrapped up in your words that they'll buy what you're selling? Yep... sure ... you could try that but people don't want to read too much so you'll lose them if you have too many words for them to read.
You could also write about all the features that your product has that makes it so much better than every other similar product on the market. But that won't work either ... and if you don't understand why that approach won't work then head over to Rated Hot and read what I said there.
And then there's the issue of just how many words you might be allowed to use to get a sales pitch across. TGPs aren't big on text and if you try and include too much text your galleries won't get listed.
But that's not the only issue with text as some very experienced copywriters point out. Sometimes you can use something as brief as a bulleted list to get your message across but the chances are that you'll sell a whole lot more if you use your words to tell a story ... and bulleted lists don't usually tell stories.
Ok so how do you tell a story in just a few words ... sadly we've sold our marketing soul to those who want to limit the number of words we use in exchange for traffic to our sites ... so it's important to know how to tell a story in as few words as possible.
Now you may be thinking that it all sounds like it's a goal that's impossible. I'm saying that you have to tell a story but I'm admitting that you probably have only a few words to do use in that story? Have I gone nuts?
Not in the least ... I'm a firm believer that if you're prepared to stop and spend a few minutes thinking about your sales pitch you can tell a very appealing story in as little as three words. You can do it by using words that appeal to someone's imagination ... think of it as using key words that will turn on a person's imagination so that they end up telling themselves a complete story using just your three words.
You still think I'm crazy? I'm not ... I might admit to being a little mad but I'm not crazy because I've done the three-word story myself and I know it can work.
Here in Australia being a hooker is perfectly legal and in some parts of the country you can openly advertise in the newspapers. But the advertising rates for sex workers is not cheap so, like any good business person, you need to keep your costs down. To do that you need to keep your ads short.
Now for some years I worked as a hooker and I advertised in the paper and I used just three words to describe myself. For the purposes of the newspaper ad I was cheeky, cute, cuddly and that was enough.
Those three words fired up the imagination of lots of guys ... they told themselves their own story of what it would be like to spend time with me ... and my phone rang.
So what story can you get your customers to tell themselves about your product so that they will want to buy what you're selling? You might not have to limit yourself to just three words but with adult products less is often more.
The less you say the more their imagination tells them and the story that they hear will be what they want to hear and it will encourage them to buy what you're selling.
