Are You Stuck in the Past?
(Article Contributed By Marie, of Sex Story Text - Posted on July 21st, 2010)

You only have to look around at our very own industry to see that we're really in a period of great change. Well-known programs are disappearing and even some that were industry leaders a few years ago have faded away.

These days if you want to survive you've got to keep up with those changes ... there's no way you'll survive if you stay stuck in your cave churning out the same old stuff day after day. Accepting the fact that we need to change can be very hard for many people in this industry because there was a long period of time when the same old marketing methods worked and it seemed as if there was no need to change.

But when you stop and think about it this is the very industry where we should never be caught napping. The Internet was always cutting edge technology and we should have been aware that as that technology advanced even further the way people use it to communicate was going to change too.

Somehow though many of us got stuck in a groove ... we learned the way to sell our products when we first came into the industry and we've never tried anything different. We've never moved with the times ... we still think that if some marketing method made us money back then it must surely work now.

Of course that's not the way it is. We have a mainstream client who; up until now, has had a very successful bricks and mortar business but a few years back it became obvious that they needed to have a presence online.

They were reluctant to have a website built but finally did but now ... as their client base is embracing social media ... they just don't want to go any further. We've given them all the tools they need but they just don't want to use them.

Unfortunately for them their competitors aren't reluctant to jump into the social media scene at all and traffic to their website and people coming through their front door is falling away. And that's the way it is for many people in this industry who have done well in the past but haven't bothered to ... or been able to ... keep up with changes in the way the people we sell to are using the Net.

Bryan Eisenburg ... a noted online marketer over in mainstream ... suggests that we all need to develop an approach to online marketing similar to the one that Amazon has. He points to the way Amazon was able to reconfigure their entire MP3 store in just a few hours after the death of Michael Jackson as something that we should be able to do.

When Amazon did that they were able to take advantage of the sudden huge demand for Jackson's music while many of the competitors ... especially those with no online presence ... missed out on the rush entirely.

So how fast can you react to change? Are you even bothering to keep up with trends or the buzz that regularly goes through the market place? Do you even think that it's important to keep up with those trends?

Sadly the way this industry is structured means that it can be difficult to react to change quickly ... especially if we're still focusing our marketing efforts on what worked years ago. If you're building free sites and galleries it's difficult to change any part of those once they're built. So maybe you're going to have to change the way you sell your sponsors' products.

Maybe it's time to start looking at new ways of getting your message in front of those who might buy what you're selling. Maybe it's time to start looking at what marketing methods you can use that will give you the freedom to react to sudden trends and the buzz that comes from the marketplace.

But if that's what you're thinking of doing you need to be a little careful. If you've been concentrating on free sites and galleries and now you want t make a change make sure that you make the right change.

If you've been locked in the past you might think that the best marketing option these days is a blog ... or a series of blogs. There's no doubt that blogs do still work ... adding new content that can take advantage of new trends and exciting buzz can be done quickly ... but blogs are becoming yesterday's marketing tool.

Blogs have been around for a while and, if we want to be perfectly honest, they are ... and were ... only ever a bit of a marketing side track. There are still many people out there who don't know what a blog is ... or if they do have never bothered to read one.

But there are other forms of social media that everyone knows about and many people use. Those forms of social media are what you need to be thinking about now because that's where your target audience is right now. That's where they are now ... but it's not necessarily where they will be this time next year.

So take your message to them where they are right now but be prepared to move on as your market moves on and don't ever get stuck in the past again.
