Take a Break and Learn About Marketing
(Article Contributed By Marie, of Sex Story Text - Posted on July 23rd, 2010)
So how goes the struggle to make a buck these days? How are you coping with all the drama of sponsors shutting their affiliate programs and the sad fact that those sponsors who are still around are sending out smaller and smaller checks?
I suppose if you've been stung by some of those sponsors who have shut their program doors and not bothered to pay out what they owe it's tempting to get angry ... to rant on boards and maybe even throw things around your office ... but where's the productivity in that?
It might make you feel a little better but is it going to help you increase your income levels? Probably not and it will almost certainly have the opposite effect because that anger will linger and burn and while that's happening it's hard to concentrate on work.
So what should you do when you get more bad news that's going to impact on your bottom line? Well maybe it's time to take a little holiday.
No, I haven't lost my marbles ... I do understand that when times are tough most people can't afford a vacation. The sort of holiday I'm talking about isn't going to take you away from your computer ... the sort of holiday I'm talking about isn't even going to take you away from the Net.
The sort of holiday I'm talking about is one that takes you away from this industry for an hour or two and, while you may think that you just don't have that sort of time to spare, you may find that it might turn out to be an incredibly valuable use of your time.
You see, the sort of vacation I'm talking about is one that will take you on a ramble through parts of the Net that you don't normally visit. Jump onto Google and do a search for a topic that doesn't normally interest you. For example; if you're a guy do a search for women's shoes or if you're a girl do a search for something like workshop tools.
When Google has given you some results click on the first organic listing and start your journey. Follow internal links ... follow external links ... see where they lead you and look at the scenery as your move along on your trip.
Look at page layouts ... look at colors ... see how they're used or abused and the influence that they may have on the way you feel about the website. Don't focus on the content but look at what the content is wrapped in.
Look at the images ... look at the graphics ... look at the way advertising is or isn't blended into the pages. If you've got something like SEOBook's toolbar incorporated into your browser look at the page rank, the back links, the traffic numbers and the amount of social media exposure the site has.
If you haven't got something as advanced as SEOBook's toolbar then Google's tool bar can give you plenty of information too.
Explore the way the site links to other sites and look to see how those sites link back to the site that you came from. Look at how a site fits into the subject that you were exploring and whether the out-links keep you within that broad subject or take you beyond it and into something quite different.
And while you're out there looking at all that information keep an open mind. Dismiss nothing ... absorb everything ... and then start to think about what you're seeing and how relevant it might be to the marketing that you do and how you can incorporate it into what you do.
While this might have started on a journey to get your mind off the anger that you had after a sponsor ripped you off it should quickly turn into a whole bunch of very valuable lessons that you can take something from and apply it to your own situation.
Here in adult we've often had a very smug and condescending attitude about our marketing prowess. There was a time when that attitude was quite right but not these days. Right now there are lots of people out there who are selling products using techniques that make us look like a bunch of cavemen daubing paint on cave walls so we need to learn from those people who are doing it better than we are.
What better time to start that learning process than right now when you're pissed off by people in this industry. What better time to start looking objectively outside of our industry than when you need to take some time out.
Enjoy your trip and I'll see you on Monday.
