Go Hard or Go Home
(Article Contributed By Marie, of Sex Story Text - Posted on July 28th, 2010)
Ever since I started writing this column here at Porn Resource I've been urging anyone who reads my scribblings to start developing their own traffic sources. Just about everyone who comes into adult marketing online starts with free sites and galleries and relies on the link lists and TGPs for their traffic and that's really a two-edged sword.
Sure those link lists and TGPs can send you plenty of traffic but they lull you into a false sense of security. You become dependant on them for your traffic ... it's easy ... you build a site or gallery ... you submit it ... they send you traffic ... it's an all-win situation. But there's a hidden danger there.
The hidden danger for anyone who relies on traffic from link lists and TGPs is what do you do if they stop sending you that traffic? You may think that the supply of traffic will never end but let's be honest here ... their presence on the Web is just as tenuous as yours ... their sources of traffic can go from a flood to a trickle in the blink of an eye.
When that traffic stops coming what do you do?
The simple answer to that question is that your business dies. When you rely on others for traffic to your websites and that traffic dries up your sales stop ... the checks stop ... and you're screwed.
So if you haven't already started then right now ... right this very second ... is the time to start building your own traffic sources because tomorrow could be too late. But how do you build your own traffic sources?
In the past I've talked about building up your own network of sites ... hubs ... portals ... and even your own niche link lists and TGPs that list nothing but your own work. And that will work for you ... to a degree ... but you want to look at this from a different perspective ... you want to go and stand on a chair to look at your world so that you might see things differently.
You want to go and tap into mainstream traffic.
Yep that's exactly what you should be thinking about doing ... you want to build something that might pull in some mainstream traffic that you can then filter through several more sites till at least some of that traffic is looking at your adult sites because that's what they choose to do.
Of course you don't want to pull in a whole bunch of people who don't want to see your adult content and you don't want to pull in a bunch of underage surfers either. So you go looking for traffic that might be more than interested in what you have to show them but may not be thinking in terms of online porn at the particular time they're surfing the Net.
How do you do that? Well there are probably a number of different things you could do but here's just one.
Build a directory of the adult stores in your town, city or state. It doesn't have to be anything fancy ... just the name of the store, the address and the phone number. I wouldn't link out to the stores if they happen to have a website and I definitely wouldn't use a content management system to build the directory.
Build the site in straight HTML/CSS ... use all the SEO tricks that work but don't be tempted to do anything dumb like keyword stuffing or having hidden text.
The only advertising that I would include on the directory would be some banners or text links to something like a sponsor who has an online video store and the next directory that you're going to build. This directory will be of strip clubs in your state.
Once again make it simple ... just the name, address and phone number ... but this time I'd be tempted to add a little bit of decoration to each page with one or two softcore images.
The only advertising that I would put on the site would be for a softcore portal or hub that you own. Obviously from that softcore portal or hub you would start thinking about directing the traffic on to your more hardcore marketing sites.
Make sure that you've built an XML sitemap for both the adult store directory and the strip club directory and list them in Google's Webmaster Tools. Then go back to the free sites that you've built and link as many of those ‘Leave' buttons as you can change back to your adult store directory.
And when you've done all that it's time to extend the scope of those directories to other cities, states etc.
Now that may all sound like a lot of hard work but if you're not prepared to go hard you may as well go home right now because the time will come when every traffic source you control will be worth far more than you might imagine and those who have no traffic sources of their own will be out of the industry.
