How do You Make Decisions?

Yes, I know that it's Monday and I know that most people on Monday are living in some sort of alternate universe ... a place where you're wishing that it was either still the day before or that the next five days might be cancelled due to lack of interest. But lots of people make decisions on Monday so it's probably a good day to talk about how we make decisions.

Some decisions we make can have almost no obvious influence on our lives. I mean does it really matter if I go for lunch now or in five minutes? In most instances making a decision like that has no impact on your life ... unless of course it puts you in the path of an out-of-control car or in the sights of some mentally deranged person who has a gun and wants to shoot someone ... anyone.

On the other hand decisions can have a very direct and obvious influence on your life. Deciding on which sponsor to use for a new site can mean the difference between making lots of money and making none. Deciding to stick with a sponsor who you know is facing problems can mean the difference between having a fat sponsor check at the end of the month or having no money at all at the end of the month.

So how do you go about making decisions that will have an obvious impact on your future?

Many people rely on hunches ... those vague or even strong feelings we may get when we have to make a decision ... feelings that are based on nothing more substantial than a sensation in our stomach or an emotion in our brain.

It's hard to quantify just how effective hunches are even though there have been studies done on just how effective hunches are. One study looked at the survival rate of soldiers in combat who made life and death decisions based solely on hunches.

Of course whether a hunch in those situations did safe lives is hard to tell because no one really knows for sure in every situation what would have happened if those soldiers had not followed their hunches. And then there is the question of what fires up those hunches in the first place.

Back when I worked as an escort I would occasionally get phone calls from guys who wanted to make an appointment to see me but something about their voice or the way they spoke made me feel very uncomfortable so they wouldn't get the appointment they were seeking. I was relying on a hunch that was telling me that those guys were dangerous.

You might think that was a sensible approach and I still think it was ... but then there was another guy who rang for an appointment several times and I saw him on each occasion. Everything about him seemed ok ... I had no gut feelings ... no hunches ... but several years later I saw that he had been arrested in the United Kingdom and charged with the murder of five or six escorts.

I still get the shivers when I think of that and I wonder why nothing in his approach triggered any warning bells for me. There was no hunch on those occasions that prevented me from being in harm's way

So I would suggest that if you make your decisions based solely on hunches you could be leaving yourself open to problems because obviously not every major decision you will be called on to make can have a positive outcome if you make those decisions based on a hunch.

If you can't rely on hunches when it comes to making decisions then obviously you need to weigh up the facts. Is this sponsor you want to use reliable? What do others say about them? Are their creatives appealing? Do they have a unique selling point that no other sponsor has?

Perhaps those are the sort of questions you should be asking yourself when it comes to making a decision about a sponsor. Obviously you'll then be able to make some informed decisions that should have a positive outcome ... but will they?

Perhaps you're thinking that I'm about to suggest a third way of making decisions ... some method that's infallible. Well I certainly wish that there might be some other infallible way of making a decision but there isn't.

What I am going to suggest though is that when you're making an informed decision ... a decision where you weigh up the facts ... that you look a little deeper than what you might see on the surface.

When we're looking for that new sponsor to promote it's quite easy to see if they really do have a unique selling point. Once you've been in this industry for a while you'll know what's unique and what isn't ... but what about how reliable a sponsor might be. And it's the same with the creatives that they offer their affiliates

You can always ask on one of the adult forums about the sponsor you're thinking of promoting and you will get a lot of positive feedback but is it all genuine? Not only is it in the interests of other webmasters to promote a sponsor (don't forget there's usually a commission for referring a new webmaster to a sponsor) but there's also the Bro Network where some sponsors will support one another even if the one they're supporting isn't as reliable as they claim to be.

To avoid bogus recommendations searching for the answers you want ... when you need answers to questions like that then Google really is your friend.

But don't just rely on Google when it comes to making decisions. Look to see how that sponsor might fit in with what you've already built. You know it's not impossible to pick a new sponsor ... go to all the trouble of downloading creatives and maybe even building a few of your own ... and then realize that the new sponsor that really appealed to you and got you all excited is going to have very little appeal to the traffic that's currently hitting your websites.

Sometimes when you're making decisions ... even decisions based on something more than a hunch ... you can make a serious blunder that can cost you time and money.

So perhaps when it comes to making important decisions you should take your time ... consider your hunches ... do some research ... look at what's gone before ... and give it some more thought before you make up your mind.
