Some Helpful Links
(Article Contributed By Marie, of Sex Story Text - Posted on August 13th, 2010)
Ok so it's Friday and I should be starting to wind down from a hectic week shouldn't I? I mean Fridays are designed to help you get ready for a weekend of fun and relaxation aren't they?
Well it seems that for yet another week my Friday is going to be filled with craziness and the weekend is going to be filled with work so let's jump into another Friday column and see what dribbles out of my brain.
Site reports
If you've been working online for anything longer than a week or two you've probably come across at least one website that says that it can give you a report on how well your website is doing from a technical perspective.
Some of those sites will look at your code and offer you suggestions on how you can make it more effective. Others will look at your loading time ... your head tags ... keyword density and many other things that can be relevant or not.
Some of the advice you get can be very helpful ... some of the advice can be irrelevant ... and then some of the advice can encourage you to waste a lot of time doing things to your site that are going to have little or no impact on how well it does in the search engines or as a marketing tool.
Some of the sites do measure things that are important right now while others seem to be a product of last year and produce data on things like keyword density and other 'stuff' that was once important but is now just a part of search engine history.
Just this week Steve came across websitegrader.com and for a giggle ran a report on one of his major sites. While it gave him a lot of information that he already knew it also gave him some information that he didn't know that will help him improve its reach.
The report was free and maybe it's something that you might find helpful too.
Getting a start in HTML5
Back on Wednesday I talked at some length about HTML5 and yesterday I came across a link to html5boilerplate.com. This site describes itself as "the professional badass's base HTML/CSS/JS template for a fast, robust and future-proof site" and you can download that template in a zip file.
While I certainly grabbed the file I've been so busy that I haven't had a chance to even open it yet so I can't give you a personal report on what the contents of the file are like. However, I can tell you that since grabbing the file I have seen reports from a number of people who I respect and they're all say that what you find in the zip file is a great resource.
So if you want start playing around with HTML5 the zip file you can get from html5boilerplate.com might be an easy way to get started. All you have to remember is that the contents of the zip file are a starting point and not something that you should be afraid of playing with.
Designing for mobile devices
Some years ago when Voltar suggested to a few of us that we should start experimenting with websites for mobile phones the important design rules were fairly simple.
Keep your screen size to no more than 320 pixels wide, keep the file size of any images you used to something far less than we would use on a normal website, make sure that the text was big enough to be read on the small screen and make sure you never asked the user to scroll to the right were about the only things we really had to worry about.
These days though things are becoming much more complex and there's even been a fairly comprehensive guide to mobile web design best practice released over on the Opera site. To locate it just head over to dev.opera.com and search the articles section for “mobile web optimization guide” and all will be revealed.
Hopefully I'll get some time to do some reading this weekend and that guide is going to be on the top of my reading list.
Making more sales online
Something else that will be on my reading list this weekend is quite a long post over on the Copyblogger website. The post's title is "101 Ways to Make More Sales Online" and you'll find it by doing a search for that title over at copyblogger.com
Now it's time for me to go in search of my first coffee of the day and prep for my first meeting and then try and get my head back into a very complex four-page form I'm building before yet more meetings fill my afternoon.
20 years ago a complex form ... or any sort of form for that matter ... would have bored me to tears but now I find it really interesting. Damn I must live a sad life!
