Wow it's Monday morning and I'm working like a machine here. Backups done ... press release for a client done ... important emails sent ... a couple of other small jobs done ... and it's just as well that I'm in the mood to work because there are plenty of jobs to get done today.
I might even get some time out of the office to go and call on a few clients today and, now that the sun is up and it looks like yet another perfect day, getting out of the office for a while would be great.
The wonder wheel
Another webmaster pointed me to this interesting little tool over the weekend and it's something you might have some fun playing with. Even though it may be fun to play with there's a serious side to this tool and it can open up some interesting areas that you can extend your marketing into or perhaps give you some ideas on other ways to market your products.
To access the wonder wheel all you have to do is go to Google ... type a search term into the search box and wait till the search results page is displayed. Once the usual 10 listings is displayed then take a look over on the left side of the page and you will see a link labeled 'Show search tools'.
Click on that link and suddenly a whole bunch of other search tools appears. Look down the list of tools till you find the 'Wonder wheel' and click on that. The search results that were displayed in the centre of the page are now pushed over to the right side of the page and the empty spot that's left is filled with a spoked wheel.
Each spoke will offer you a different path to look for things that might be related to your original search. My search for 'mature porn' brought up a wheel with spokes pointing to Craig's List, The Hun, CNN, MSN, and a couple of other places. Click on any of those spokes and you're beginning to delve into some interesting areas that you may be able to exploit.
You may also find that Google is a little reluctant to show you much that's interesting when you use the wonder wheel to search for hardcore adult topics so you may get better results if you search for more softcore search terms.
And while you're playing with the wonder wheel don't forget that list of other search tools. It's still sitting over there on the left of the page and it might be worthwhile to play with some of those other tools too.
Learning from others
Now here's something else that's worth exploring while you're taking some time out with that wonder wheel. If you've been around the industry for a while then you will have undoubtedly heard this piece of advice before but it's worth repeating.
If you've done a search for an adult term that's important for your business and you've had enough of playing with the wonder wheel then go back to the original search that you did and spend some time looking at the sites that are ranking at the top for those terms.
Now of course I don't mean that you should spend time looking at the images ... although that might be fun. What you should be looking at are all those things that will help you understand how that page came to reach the top of Google's search results for an important term.
If you have Firefox make sure that you have Quirk Search Status installed because it will give you some invaluable information about the pages that you're looking at. Use Quirk Status to look at are the sites that link back to the sites that sit at the top of the search results and follow some of those back-links. Look at the sites that link to the one that you originally saw at the top of the search results and check out their back-links too.
You can use Quirk Search Status to highlight the keywords that are important on each page that you visit. If you have the Google Toolbar installed you can also highlight the keywords on each page you visit.
Do a little digging into the source code of the page too ... because you just never know what you're going to find there.
And once you have spent some time looking back down the linking trail from that site that ranked so well you should have discovered a few things that you can incorporate into your sites that might help you rank well for important search terms.
