Catching Their Attention

The other day I caught a snippet of a conversation on Twitter between one of the leading ... but lesser known ... search engine optimization specialists in the United States and a few of the people who follow him. Unfortunately I didn't have the time at that point to go back and look at the rest of the conversation and now I just can't find it but it was interesting because it touched on what you can do to attract a person's attention to your marketing efforts.

More about that in a moment but first let me ask you how do you stop someone who is really only interested in your content and get them to refocus on something you want to sell them? It's a problem that every online and print marketer has and only those who have an answer are going to make money.

The person who is on your page is there to see the content ... whether it be adult or mainstream in nature ... and they're not really interested in your ads but you do want them to look at your marketing. You only have a few seconds to grab their attention before your ad has gone from their view so what do you do to catch their attention?

Of course there have always been those good old power words ... words like 'stop', 'sale', 'bargain', 'save money' etc. that are guaranteed to get a response from anyone who sees them. People are conditioned to react in predictable ways to words like that so they do stop and at least start to read your ad ... but is there any guarantee that they're going to read beyond the first few words?

Sadly there are no guarantees because it only takes a split second ... one or two dull words ... and the person has lost interest and you've lost the chance of making a sale. But what if there were other words that you could use that would hold their interest long enough for you to close the sale?

What if there were words or phrases that you could use that would really hold a person and encourage them to read more? What if there were words or phrases that could light up a person's imagination to the point where they wanted to be part of the story your marketing is telling?

Telling a story with your marketing? Perhaps that's a concept that's foreign to you but many of the world's leading marketers agree that if you really want to sell a product you have to tell weave your marketing message into a story that the person buying the product can relate to. Of course doing that in an adult site ... especially a single gallery ... can be rather difficult because you only have a limited amount of space for just a few words.

But again I'll ask the question ... what if it could be done? What if just a few words ... a single phrase ... or a short sentence ... was all that was needed to get someone beyond the action words and into the story that you're weaving in their mind that will ultimately sell your product?

Well maybe there is and to find out what those words or phrases might be we need to go back to that snippet of conversation that I saw on Twitter.

The conversation seemed to start when someone posted a suggestion that some experts were now of the opinion that the first words that humans may have ever used ... way back when our ancestors lived in caves ... were words that described odors and scents.

Following on from that suggestion someone said this: "If odors were the first words, does that tell you something about how to write compelling content?"

Now I don't know whether or not this is just another blind alley that we all wander down from time to time when we try to improve the power of our marketing message but remember that we need to be weaving a story and firing up the imagination of those who see our message.

Also remember what it was like the last time you had sex with a guy or a girl. The dance of intimacy is full of scents and odors that you will remember all your life. There's the subtle scent that a woman might use to attract a man's attention ... there's the unmistakable scent of a woman on heat that no aroused woman can hide and that has an incredibly powerful affect on a man.

Perhaps those are what we could be using to tell our story and market our product. All you have to do is figure out how to work it into your text.
