Thinking – a Dangerous Pastime
(Article Contributed By Marie, of Sex Story Text - Posted on August 23rd, 2010)

Last week was one of those times when things were a little quiet for one part of my business and very busy for other parts. Unfortunately for me the busy parts were the ones that I control while the quiet parts were the ones that Steve looks after.

Now quiet times can be good ... it's a time to recharge your batteries ... tidy up your office ... do some reading and maybe even some research ... maybe play a computer game or two ... or perhaps even get away from the computer and spend time in the hobby you're really hooked on.

Unfortunately Steve didn't get away from his computer and he didn't tidy his office. Instead he did some reading and some research and then he began thinking.

If you've got yourself into a comfortable groove and things are going well for your business ... you've got all the customers you can handle and then some ... surfers are snapping up what you're selling ... the cash flow is a nicely growing river of money flowing in the door ... and your customers are all happy and busy referring others to you ... life is good.

You're happy ... you're comfortable and you're beginning to think that you might be close to living the dream. And then someone goes and spoils it all by thinking ... not only does he spend time thinking but he then spends time convincing me that he could be right and things could be about to change.

So how are the times going to change and will it have any impact on adult? Well let's draw together a couple of seemingly unrelated things that are happening out there in Internet land and also let me preface what I'm about to say with the thought that there's nothing set in concrete here ... at least not yet.

The first thing we should think about is a little test that Google ran the week before last. For several hours on the Thursday or the Friday of the week before last if you did a search on Google for car hire in Manhattan all you got for the entire first page of the results were paid listings.

There was not one organic listing on the page ... at least not that some search engine marking experts could see. Google did say that there was one organic listing on that page ... down at either position nine or ten ... but just about everyone who saw that search page failed to see the organic listing.

So could we be looking at a future where Google changes the way it lists sites when someone does a search for just about any term? Could we be seeing a time when Google changes the way it lists sites when someone does a search for a highly competitive term?

Now you may think that will never happen but let's not forget that Google is now a commercial company and if it thinks that there is a way to increase its revenue without driving people away then Google will move down whatever path will increase its revenue. And if you think that could never happen just remember that we're thinking about adult here.

What better way to show people that you're interested in protecting the community's morals than by cutting out organic listings entirely and making every adult webmaster pay for the privilege of getting listed on Google. And if you're going to make some people pay why not make those in mainstream who are already prepared to pay, pay just a little bit more to guarantee they're on the first page?

So if there's a possibility that Google might move organic listings so far down in the results that it becomes uneconomic for site owners to pay for ... or spend time on ... search engine optimisation what should we be doing right now?

The second thing that's worth talking about here is the rise and rise of social networking sites such as Facebook. Here I have to make a serious admission ... I thought Facebook would be around for a while and gather up quite a few followers but then they would leave and Facebook would die.

I guess I was very wrong ... Facebook is definitely not going away!

Not only is Facebook not going away but it's becoming more and more appealing to users every day. For example you can now build an online shop ... on Facebook and we could be building one of those for a client in the next few weeks.

Until last week I didn't even know that there were shopping carts designed solely for use on Facebook but now ... thanks to Steve ... I see that there are and so does one of our clients. For that client Facebook is almost the perfect place to sell the products that he has to offer.

The overall theme of what my client wants to sell already has a huge following on Facebook and tapping into all those people on Facebook would be much easier than trying to rank well on Google. So a shop on Facebook is a no-brainer for this client.

And then there's the thought of offering our clients qualified leads using social media as the starting point. What's a qualified lead worth to a businessman who is too busy to go chasing them himself?

Do you see how giving someone time to think ... or even you spending time thinking can be dangerous? My comfortable world could be about to be turned upside down all because Steve had time to think.
