Pushing Through

Yesterday Steve and I were working on a multi-page brochure for a client and I came up with three great words that meant we could cut out a whole sentence and increase the impact of the text that was left. Unfortunately I came up with those words at a time when neither of us could write them down and do you think I can remember them now?

Of course not!

Oh well hopefully they will come to me at some time today before we have to fire up the printers and start churning out a whole bunch of brochures for the client to take to an important meeting later in the week.

So that's my great start to this week ... how is your Monday going?

I'm sure you've all had a great weekend ... you've been out in the sun enjoying Summer's last hurrah ... and now you're eager to get back to work and turn out some really creative marketing that will make your sponsors' sites sell like hotcakes.

Oh ... you're not feeling that way at all? You're feeling tired ... worn out ... you didn't get outside at all over the weekend and all you really want to do is go back to bed and sleep for a week?

Well that kind of resonates with me too ... and I know that Steve is wishing there was at least another day in this weekend ... but it's not going to happen in this neck of the woods. Both of us have clients to see ... Steve's got some video to help edit and someone to train in the mysteries of Joomla ... and I need to try and convince a former client that letting a con artist have complete access to the his sites on our server would be a major mistake.

The only way to achieve some positive outcomes from that list today is to push ourselves to get on with it and stop wishing for something we can't have. And if you're facing a day when you know you have to do some work but you really don't want to then perhaps it's time you stopped wishing for things you can't have and push yourself to get on with the work you have to do.

I know that there are many who would say that if you really don't to work then you shouldn't because if you do have to push yourself you may just end up wasting your time ... you make mistakes and your creatives are as dry and boring as week-old dog poo. They would tell you that it's almost impossible to do your best work when you really don't feel like working ... and sometimes they're right.

If you do have the luxury of being able to take time off when you're feeling run down and worn out then you should take it. However in these tough times there aren't many of us who really do have that luxury ... especially in this industry where it can be hard to keep your cash flow happening if you're not actually doing anything to generate it.

So pushing yourself to get on and get some work done may well be a necessity but it doesn't necessarily mean that you'll be wasting your time or producing work that's inferior to what you might produce if you were in a better frame of mind.

There's no real reason why you can't produce great work at times when you would rather be somewhere else just so long as you don't rush the work and you get your head into the right space to produce good work.

Focus on the work you have to do ... shut out all the distractions that might take your mind off what you're doing ... and promise yourself a reward when you've finished the work ... and you'll be surprised at what you can achieve and how effective the finished product can be.

Does that sound like a whole lot of psychological rubbish designed to fill up a column and fool you into getting back to work? I suppose it does sound that way to some people but getting focused on the work I have to get done instead of sitting around wishing I was somewhere else always works for me and you just may find that it works for you too.

Of course I also add in a strong cup of coffee ... or two and try not to look at my inbox till the work I need to do is finished. After all, the last thing I want to see in there is yet another email from another client asking me to do something with their website or print marketing as a matter of urgency because they forgot to mention it to me when they first thought of it two weeks ago and now they need it tomorrow.

Yes ... if you guessed that I just took a look in my inbox and found something like that you would be right.

Hmmm ... the sun is shining and the birds are singing and ... it's a struggle but I'll be a good girl and I'll keep on working ... maybe.
