Where is Your Head Right Now?

Woo Hoo it's Hump Day and this is one Wednesday that's looking good. I think that it was only last Wednesday that I was grumping about what day it was and how the fact that it was Wednesday was no real cause for celebration but things sure can change in just a few days.

Yesterday we finished a major project that had an incredibly short deadline and tomorrow we start work on another project that requires us to head out to sea for the day to spend some time whale-watching. Of course then we have to come back to the office and do a lot more mundane stuff to finish the job ... but anything that pays us to spend time out of the office having fun is fine with me.

Now that's quite a change from the way I was feeling last week. Last week the pressure was really on to get some important work finished for a client ... a few others were taking their sweet time to pay accounts ... and the days ahead were already filled up with more and more work. Yes, my head was not in a good place last week and I didn't really think I'd be feeling this good just a week later.

So where's your head at right now? Is it in a good place or are things not looking so good for you right now?

How you're feeling ... where your head is and where it's going ... is something that you really do have to watch. If you don't have it already you really must develop the ability to take a step back and look at yourself and make an honest appraisal of how you're doing within yourself.

And don't for a moment think that because your business is going well you don't have to worry about what's happening inside your head because what's happening inside you doesn't always depend on what's happening to your business.

I know that may sound a little odd and if times are tough and your business is struggling to survive then you head is almost certainly not in a good place but it can be in almost the same place even though your business is doing well. Heck my business is doing really well but sometimes I just go down.

So why is it important to take an objective look at where you are? Because when you're down ... when you're feeling worn out and tired ... you make silly mistakes ... you make crazy decisions ... you do things that you would never do when you're feeling good about being alive.

When you don't know where you're at inside your head then you don't realize that you could be in danger of making those crazy decisions and mistakes or doing things you should not do and, for most of us, the only person who can prevent you from making those bad choices and mistakes is you.

Fortunately I've got a partner who works with me ... and lives with me ... and he can spot my mood swings and help me avoid making decisions when my head isn't in a good place but many people in this industry just don't have that support. Even if you do live with someone who cares for you they may not understand the pressures that this industry can place on a person and they may not even notice you slide into a period where your head just isn't in the right place.

So if you're in that position ... you either live and work alone or you live with someone who isn't in touch with what's happening around you and to you ... then you need to regularly take that step back and look at where you're at. And you need to be honest with yourself too.

It's not a sign of weakness to admit that you're down and it's not a sign of weakness to stop what you're doing and try to get your head back to where it should be. Sometimes all it might take is a few hours away from the computer and out in the real world. A wander in the park ... some retail therapy ... time with friends ... even some escapism at the movies ... they're all good ways to overcome short-term down-times.

But even after you've taken some time away and you're beginning to feel better don't think that you've got the problem beat. You really do need to factor in some regular times away from the computer and away from your business to stay refreshed because things that will again bring you down can quickly build up.

So keep a watch on yourself or you will just drift off into another one of those places where you really don't need to be and once again your head will not be in a good place. And be sure to come back on Friday because I'll here with some more strategies to help you keep your head in the right place.
