Of This and That

Well another week has rolled around and here I am back sitting in front of my keyboard dredging my mind for something to share with you guys.
I don't know how the last week has been for you guys but for us it's been another one filled with long hours ... lots of challenges presented to us by new clients ... and little time to keep up with the changes in the online marketing industry that are always happening.
Even this morning has been more than a little crazy but I think I have a few moments to spare to do something here that probably resembles a brain dump.
Copywriting
Yes I've talked about copywriting before ... on numerous occasions ... but if you slept through those talks or you just weren't interested in marketing back then perhaps what I want to say next is for you.
Let's face it ... there many people around the Net who claim to be copywriters but most of them have no idea of what copywriting really is. A good copywriter may not be able to turn a bad product into a top seller but he can certainly go a long way towards at least helping you break even if you're the schmuck who has landed the job of moving that less than stellar product.
While there are courses for copywriters and plenty of online tutorials you have to understand that some of those courses and tutorials are written by some of those who are copywriters in name only. Of course that means that the information and the techniques that you will pick up from those courses and tutorials aren't going to be of much help at all.
However all is not lost because there are several excellent books on copywriting that are available and perhaps the best is one that was first published way back in 1985. It's gone through several reprints since then and I have to say that what it can teach you is still as valuable now as it was back in 1985.
The book is called "The Copywriter's Handbook - a step-by-step guide to writing copy that sells." and the author is Robert W Bly. Even though the Web and things like Adwords advertising wasn't around when Bly first wrote the book the techniques he wants to share with you are timeless and what the book can teach you will even work with Adwords.
Microformatting
If you haven't been paying attention then the whole deal of microformatting has probably crept up on you and is about to bite you in the ass. That means that it's well and truly time that you did a search for terms such as 'microformatting' and 'schema' and got yourself up to speed before every other Webmaster runs right over the top of you in the race for good search engine placement.
If you're going to apply microformatting to a standard website then you're going to find that it will take some time to work your way through all the sites that you might have out there. Now fixing old sites may seem like a bit of a waste of time but that really depends on each site ... some are going to be worth fixing while others are best left to slowly face into the back pages of the search results.
However, if you happen to be using WordPress on your sites then there are some plugins available that will take a lot of the hard work out of adding microformatting to your sites. Some of the plugins are better than others and unfortunately probably the best one I've seen so far is only suitable for recipe sites.
But don't let that stop you from looking for the microformatting plugin that's right for you because ultimately everyone will be using microformatting because that's what Google wants.
Working with friends
Over the years I've talked to lots of people in this industry and some I've got to know very well ... even though I've never met them face to face. Sadly a lot of those people have dropped by the wayside as times have become tough or they've lost interest in making money online and I no longer have any contact with them.
I still talk to one or two others even though they're not working in the adult online industry anymore and a chance comment that my partner made to one of those friends on Twitter with one has the potential to open up a whole new business for us and for our friend.
Obviously I'm not going to go into it now but you need to be aware that sometimes something big can grow from the smallest seed and sometimes something you say can lead to a partnership with people you've met online.
So when you're chatting with people in this industry via message boards or something similar to ICQ be aware that some day that person may become very important to the success of your business. Make friends and work at keeping them even though you may never meet face to face ... one day they may have the skills that you need to make something special happen.
